Hit and run tactic used by these terrorists
Improvised explosives or rocket launchers and mortars are used as a weapon of choice by insurgents everywhere. They are easy to conceal and transport. it might be most likely a Russian 82mm or 120mm. Judging by the death toll its highly likely that there might be large number of wounded too and that only suggests a mortar of a heavier calibre or a volley of them fired from range as the projectiles make a high angle of loop so many can be fired in a quick succession delivering maximum devastation at short notice & less time to react. This looks like a lucky shot when the troops might have assembled for briefing or were passing through a small confined place giving perfect opportunity to the terrorists.
In order to win this war not only we need the morale, resolve and the support of our population but three things
1. Superior firepower and training
2. Cutting their lines of communication and intelligence
3. cutting their supply line.
We already have the men and material to do the job but we need better intelligence to foil their attacks and also cut their own communication in order to enable surprise attacks on their hiding places. This is an area which needs a lot of improvement and that will also enable us to achieve the third point which is to cut their new recruitments and put a stop to their external sources. They have been able to fight with a regular army for 10 years which a local supply cant provide for at the scale of their operations. hence it is mainly the Afghanistan route from where they are able to replenish their supplies.
the terrain favours a gorilla war so during the colonial rule. The British army didn’t move unless it had pickets and posts along the path and on the mountain tops to nullify any ambushes. This strategy was successfully employed by the army in the swat operations when it started its campaign by occupying the mountains first. People who don’t have military knowledge criticised the waste of time in all this while the TTP was in full show of force in the town but we soon saw what happened when after occupying the tops the army moved in the cities, the TTP had no where to hide or think of counter attacking.
Without much details of the attack I am only able to guess that the mortar team of these terrorists had chosen vantage point where they could look down at the troops in a close proximity of each other and fired the shell or number of shells that unfortunately for us resulted in high number of casualties. Whether they had intelligence beforehand or whether it was a narrow pass which didn’t give much chance to the troops to manoeuvre
The actual perpetrators might have already crossed the border into Afghanistan by now or entered another agency. While the army will conduct its search operation it has to ensure that it doesn’t walk into another ambush. In order to avoid any such incidents, the army commanders have to think ahead of the Taliban.
update:
it was a friendly fire incident. the mortar shells fell on the troops location by mistake.
either way. loss is a loss and our loss is Taliban gain
