Under pressure Pak to shift 6,000 troops from border with India to Afghan side

April 30th, 2009 - 2:06 pm ICT by ANI -
New York, Apr.30 (ANI): Under immense pressure from the United States and the international community, Pakistan has decided to shift around 6000 troops from its eastern border with India to the western Afghan border, The New York Times reports.

The newspaper, quoted a Pakistani official as confirming the movement of forces to a pre-Mumbai attack position.

The redeployment of troops is seen as an important step by President Zardari ahead of the proposed trilateral talks with his US and Afghan counterparts in Washington next week.

Several American officials, in recent times, have questioned Pakistan’s sincerity in the fight against extremism in the region.

A senior military official saw Pakistan Army’s offensive in the Buner and Dir region of the NWFP as a ‘fake’.

He said it was “inexplicable” that the incidents like the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, attack on Sri Lankan cricket team and on a police training academy had not “galvanised the Pakistan Army and civilian leaders to link arms in a comprehensive, sustained campaign to fight back.

The United States has repeatedly asked Pakistan to focus more on its internal ‘existential’ threat rather than India.

CENTCOM chief General David Petraeus recently highlighted the immediate need for Pakistan to address its internal threat.

“Pakistan must reconfigure its military forces to deal with counterinsurgency operations rather than to continue its conventional focus on traditional rival India,” Petraeus said.

However, US also believes that convincing Pakistan that the internal threat posed by extremism is a bigger threat to it than India is a “tough sell”.

Addressing a US think tank recently, Senator Joseph Lieberman highlighted the need for Islamabad to understand and realize who its real enemy was.

“Pakistanis have to understand that their major enemy in the region is no longer India, but its extremism. In fact, they have a common enemy in that with the Indians,” Lieberman told Council on Foreign Relations.

He said that it was very difficult to make Pakistan accept the fact that it’s internal problem is the root cause of all the trouble. (ANI)

you really think shifting 6,000 troops (1 brigade strength) has been done under pressure, then it must have been 0-psi pressure!spare us this BS!

Dont blindfold yourself. You have been surviving on military aid from US since 1980's. One one hand you seek to pat yourself, for having America as an a major donor when it comes to F-16, missiles etc, otoh you curse them for dragging you into a situation that you created yourself. Situation wouldnt have been this, if Pakistan had stopped its double games in 2001.

One doesnt need einstein to figure out recent upscaling of words and actions just as Zaradri is all set to go to US to sign the pact. Americans have seen through the thick and thin of the mind-games of PA. I would love to see one convincing proof that suggests Pakistan was proactive and didnot do it to 'please' US. None whatsoever. Again who are we kidding? The facts? The sordid truth?

.
thanks God i dont have great mind like you have

1 brigade that two which was in coin operation before momby attacks back to its FDL in fata ....on US pressure....
wow what a logic.....
ok tell me is there any Pak india tensions or threat of war?

Deploying or not deploying 1 brigade is not my point. My point is all this is happening at a time when Pakistan desperately need US to bail them out. There was nothing whatsover 6 days back. Then all of a sudden PA launches an offensive, moves a brigade, especially the one on the Indo-Pak border, just 4 days before accpeting the aid.

Most world armies keep atleast 20-30 brigades as reserve troops? Are you telling me Pakistan has no reserve troops? Why move the one on Indo-Pak border, especially after all the hypochrisy of an imminent Indian attack? .

.
lol :d

dont you remember threats of ur cheap of army .... pakistan had to move its troops

we dont have 12 lak army or 6 military commands
so every pakistani soldier counts

Where's the link to this article? And by the way the link you posted below refers to an altogether different story, and not one bit related to what you have posted above?

This is an example of what I was referred to as 'skewed reporting and distortions' in the Indian media to continuously demonize Pakistan and inculcate a distrust and hate for it in the Indian populace.

The quote from the NY Times:

"Pakistan also agreed to move 6,000 troops from its Indian border to fight militants on its western border with Afghanistan, according to a Pakistani official who did not want to be identified discussing troop movements in advance."
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/29/world/asia/29pstan.html?scp=1&sq=6000%20troops indian&st=cse

The reproduction in the Indian newspapers:

"Under immense pressure from the United States and the international community, Pakistan has decided to shift around 6000 troops from its eastern border with India to the western Afghan border, The New York Times reports."

You see this sort of stuff in the Indian papers all the time.

On the topic, it would appear we are back to pre-Mumbai attack status then ...

.
these 6000 troops are those which were moved from western border to eastern border after mumbai tragedy. now that the situation bw pak and india have calmed down so this makes perfect sense to move the troops back to the western border. if u wanna call it 'comin under pressure' then u can call it so to feel happy for atleast today

It has become very obvious reporting..!!! Especially the times now news channel..!!! Their reporting is exactly in the above lines.. and at somtimes i feel they have opened their shop only to show the news in pakistan..!!!! However still we have got neutral channels which gives you a fair picture though..!!!!

do i again have to remind u that this war has cost us more than $36bn. for this year alone it will be $6bn. i dont think if US aid is even close to it. no one talks about the $1bn reimbursement which US should have given us last year but still havent.
we were under sanctions from 1965 till 1980 and then rit after USSR left afghanistan till 9/11. money which they were giving us in 80s was goin to the war being faught in afghanistan
