Pakistan: Security forces open fire on crowd protesting suicide bomb in Parachinar - Telegraph

Three people have died after security forces opened fire on a crowd protesting a suicide bombing attack
The demonstration took place after a bomber on a motorcycle struck in a market in the northwestern town of Parachinar, killed 23 Shiite Muslims and wounding 50.
Local government administrator Wajid Ali said many of the 23 dead were shoppers or people with stalls in the market, he said.
After the attack, security forces fired on crowds protesting the attack, killing three people, said Ali.
A local Taliban commander, Fazal Saeed Haqqani, claimed responsibility for the attack in Parachinar, whose population is mostly Shiite. He justified the attack by saying that Shiites had been attacking Sunnis.
Parachinar and the nearby region of Kurram have been plagued by sectarian violence for several years. Shiites have been the overwhelming victims.

Violence by Sunni extremists against Shiites is common in Pakistan, a Muslim country dominated by Sunnis but home to a sizeable Shiite minority. Although attacks by Shiites against Sunnis do occur, such violence is not as prevalent.
Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaeda and the Taliban often believe Shiites are infidels and that it is permissible or even praiseworthy to kill them. The emergence of those groups in the country over the last 10 years has added to the frequency and viciousness of attacks against Shiites.
Pakistan has seen hundreds of suicide attacks over the last five years, mostly by militants in the northwest close to the Afghan border who have given haven to al-Qaeda operatives and insurgents fighting in Afghanistan.
The army has responded with several offensives, but have had limited success in a country where extremists have significant support among the population.

RIP to protesters...... as well as those killed by suicide bomber

. .
Last thing pakistan needs is increasing sunni-shia fights. Sometimes security personals have to fire to protect themselves. Anyway RIP protestors and bomb victims.

Rest In Peace to dead ones.

As always security authorities were sleeping. What they get paid for????

I never got the Shia and the sunni fight, aren't they just different branch of Islam like how Lutherans and the Catholics are. So why fight. Both can follow their own way of practicing their religion.

Its about tolerance, democracy and respecting others point of view.

It might be a real issue once you look at it from the US, but here in Pakistan, the frequency of attacks has seen a massive drop in comparison to 2007-09 and I will laud the security forces for this achievement. These one off attacks are to be expected and I don' believe that they can be pinned on the Security forces alone. It took Sri-Lanka 26 years to COMPLETELY overcome their insurgency problems and they are an Island nation. We share a very porous 2250km long border with probably the most lawless region in the world i.e: Nuristan, Kunnar, Logar, Kandahar. So it remains a very significant challenge for us.

There's no Sunni-Shia fight, nor any Muslim-Non Muslim fight in Pakistan. It's just the extremist elements that are trying to spark these conflicts and it is up to us to resist their nefarious designs.

These kind of things damage Pakistan unity greatly and dong these things in such crisis.... I hope Pakistan will shake off this dirty game and starts to improve her state....

We all Pakistanis are expecting no more attacks in Pakistan, so army must be extra careful now. 23 peoples are not joke it means 23 families lost their loved ones. Army & ISI must take care of terrorism issue & let Balochistan type issues to be solved by political party. Their focus in internal issues will make them weak & destroy the country.

Its like a horse with two heads each pulling in different direction

And whats the destination of the two heads of the same horse?
Maybe i didnt get ur point, they are all muslims right, even including the ahmeddiya community...
All worship allah and Prophet muhammad, then y are they fighting...
Would be helpfull if u can be more specific....

Pakistan really needs to go forensic and build a DNA database of the suicide bombers..I am sure they must be coming from certain parts of Pakistan or abroad..and that needs to be investigated correctly..

I read news of Suicide bombers..but never heard that a suicide bomber had been traced back to his home and his family/Clan..asked about what happened and how the person got involved in suicide bombing..

Investigation on these lines has to be done.

yes we've had problems with sectarian violence in Kurram....it's not a new thing it's been going on for a very long time.

this is a rare attack as of late, peace has largely prevailed in most of Kurram for past 3-4 years....a cease-fire was signed during a jirga (i happened to attend a few of the sit-down meetings) -the most recent one being in 2010. Since that time there were taleb factions which agreed not to join the sectarian groups.....but there are taleb offshoot groups (also involved in fighting eachother) that probablly want to foment unrest in Kurram

at present there are ongoing military ops in lower and central kurram, Parachinar (being in upper Kurram) has largely been spared the militancy. Occasional tribal fighting between Turri and Mengal or Bangash tribes has gone on (mostly property disputes that take on sectarian dimension later on).

hopefully the murderers are caught and face justice.....i definitely wasnt pleased at all this morning when i saw the news.

these people who do these things against other Muslims --especially while they are at a Masjid -- are truly not Muslims...they are locusts and scum. May they suffer for what they've done.

there are some different practices, some subtle and some a little more easy to distinguish....but the actual faith is the exact same....

the terrorists are just brain-washed into thinking that Shiias are non-believers -- but these are the same people who believe everyone else who doesnt have the same limited world-views as them are also non-believers

by and large, most Pakistanis dont even care about the Sunni-Shiia thing...it only takes a few arseholes to be brainwashed and resort to violence
