GENEVA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia, Russia and 35 other states have written to the United Nations supporting China’s policies in its western region of Xinjiang, according to a copy of the letter seen by Reuters on Friday, in contrast to strong Western criticism.

China has been accused of detaining a million Muslims and persecuting ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang, and 22 ambassadors signed a letter to the U.N. Human Rights Council this week criticizing its policies.

But the letter supporting China commended what it called China’s remarkable achievements in the field of human rights.

“Faced with the grave challenge of terrorism and extremism, China has undertaken a series of counter-terrorism and deradicalization measures in Xinjiang, including setting up vocational education and training centers,” the letter said.

The letter said security had returned to Xinjiang and the fundamental human rights of people of all ethnic groups there had been safeguarded. It added there had been no terrorist attack there for three years and people enjoyed a stronger sense of happiness, fulfillment and security.

As well as Saudi Arabia and Russia, the letter was signed by ambassadors from many African countries, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, Belarus, Myanmar, the Philippines, Syria, Pakistan, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Beijing has denied any human rights violations in the region and Chinese Ambassador Xu Chen, speaking at the close of the Council’s three-week session on Friday, said China highly appreciated the support it had received from the signatories.

China blasts 22-nation letter criticizing Xinjiang policies
July 11, 2019

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday attacked a statement by 22 Western countries at the United Nations urging it to stop holding members of its Muslim population in detention centers, calling the measure necessary for national security and accusing the countries of trampling on its sovereignty.

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily briefing that the letter “disregarded the facts, slandered and attacked China with unwarranted accusations, flagrantly politicized human rights issues and grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs.”

“The Chinese side expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition,” Geng said, adding that China had registered “solemn complaints” with the countries involved.

“We urge these countries to respect the facts, discard prejudice, abide by the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter, and stop politicizing human rights issues and intervening in China’s internal affairs with the Xinjiang issue,” he said.

In addition to travel restrictions and a massive surveillance network, China is estimated to have arbitrarily detained up to 1 million Muslims in prison-like detention centers in Xinjiang, with reports of harsh treatment and poor living conditions inside.

China denies committing abuses in the centers and calls them training schools aimed at providing employable skills and combating extremism.

Geng said Xinjiang has not suffered any new violent incidents for more than two years, proving the effectiveness of the government’s approach.

“The happiness ... and sense of security of the people of all ethnic groups have substantially improved, and they sincerely support the government’s policies,” he said.

While China restricts access and reporting in Xinjiang, Geng said it would welcome a visit by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“We welcome those who truly uphold the objective and fair principle to go to Xinjiang and look around, but we resolutely oppose any external forces using the Xinjiang issue to interfere in China’s internal affairs and undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Geng said.

The US did not sign the letter, having quit the Human Rights Council last year.

22 Western countries are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

All of the above are US and Nato lackeys, not even one devleoping country, not even one non European country barring Japan and not even one Muslim country joined them.

This list is really a joke clearly showing how helpless and isolated US lackeys are in this world, and what makes them look more stupid is that US using those slave countries as its political and economic cannon fodder quit Human Rights Council itself , that's what make those lackeys really dumb.

I have watched a french tv program about the french weapon sold in countries being in war like situation or which are attacking others countries and where innocents people are/would/will killed.

A french parliamentary (I don’t remember his name) said clearly that for strategic reasons we have to sold weapons in those countries despite knowing that civilian will be killed.

Sometime, strategic reasons close every eyes.

Allah hamain maaf karay.

Saudi Arabia defied US several times recently, maybe Saudis are ready to switch camps. Witch Chinese industrial and manufacturing capacity and Saudi and Russia oil and other natural resources, together those 3 countries can eventually topple the long US Dollar dominance in the world economy.

I am glad Indonesia doesn't sign that support letter.
It didn't join the west either.

Japan seem to stick out from the group.
Japan has strong inferiority complex, it always wishes it were a European country, at one point they almost made English their official language.

US roped in 22 western allies to be against China over Xinjiang with not even one Muslim nation, China gained 37 nations to write and sign the letter to support China, many Muslim nations included, a clear win for China.

37 countries defend China over Xinjiang in UN letter
Date created : 12/07/2019 - 18:58

UN ambassadors from 37 countries released a letter Friday defending China's treatment of Uighur and other minorities in the Xinjiang region, in direct response to Western criticism earlier this week.

Envoys from across the EU -- along with Australia, Canada and Japan and New Zealand -- had earlier co-signed a text denouncing China's conduct in Xinjiang, where one million people, mostly ethnic Uighurs, are reportedly being held in internment camps.

On Friday a diverse group of states -- including Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Algeria and North Korea -- replied on Beijing's behalf.

"We commend China's remarkable achievements in the field of human rights," said the letter, also signed by Myanmar, the Philippines, Zimbabwe and others.

"We take note that terrorism, separatism and religious extremism has caused enormous damage to people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang," it said.

Rights groups and former inmates describe the internment sites in Xinjiang as "concentration camps" where mainly Muslim Uighurs and other minorities are being forcefully assimilated into China's majority ethnic Han society.

Echoing China's defence of the camps, Friday's letter described them as "vocational education and training centres."

"Now safety and security has returned to Xinjiang," it said.

The group of ambassadors asked for the letter to be recorded as an official document of the Human Rights Council, which wrapped up its 41st session in Geneva on Friday.

The Western diplomats had made the same request.

Beijing on Thursday dismissed the Western letter as "slander."

The tit-for-tat open letters is rare at the UN's top rights body, where states typically try to hammer out formal resolutions during closed-door negotiations.

After initially denying their existence, Beijing has gone on a public relations blitz in a bid to counter the global outcry against what it calls "vocational education centres" in Xinjiang.

Since last October, the local government has also organised tours of the camps for diplomats and media outlets.

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has requested a fact-finding mission to Xinjiang.

Beijing has said she is welcome, but the rights office has stressed that a visit will be only possible on certain conditions -- including unfettered access to key sites.

Interestingly, South Korea is absent.
South Korea is having a fierce fight with Japan again now, it won't like to be with Japan on anything.

So South Korea is becoming warmer towards China and wanting less confrontation with North Korea. If so, this is a winning strategy.

Poor Japan is stuck in slavery to US. They really need to drop the hostility towards China.

Japan's neighborhood: China, Russia, North Korea, South Korea. All have frosty relations with Japan. Japan blindly follows US and is always the first country to do US biddings, But US can not be always there for Japan, sooner or later Japan will realize that it has to learn to get along with its neighobrs.

Dictatorial countries promoting dictatorial rules. Shocking!
Could you tell me more about your internet freedom there? Last time I checked, defence.pk is banned in China.
You posted the post in a wrong thread I guess.
