Pakistan’s tourism potential

ON the occasion of World Tourism Day, seminars and conferences held in different parts of the country highlighted the potential of tourism in the country and bottlenecks hindering its promotion. At a similar seminar organized by Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industry, speakers called on the Punjab Government to announce a Tourism Policy to address the challenges facing the sector.

In the first place, in the prevailing circumstances, it would be naïve to expect any breakthrough towards meaningful promotion of tourist activities in the backdrop of poor law and order and security environment. Not to speak of large-scale influx of tourists, conditions do not permit at the moment to ensure hundred percent safety of even delegates to conferences and seminars. The situation would likely remain so until and unless stability and normalcy returns to the country as and when the so-called war on terror ends with withdrawal of foreign invaders from neighbouring Afghanistan and also an end to the great game being played on the soils of Pakistan. But as for the potential, it is definitely there as the country has magnificent snow-capped peaks, mesmerizing lakes, scenic beauty, deserts, cultural and religious resources but these have not so far been exploited to the optimum level and even necessary infrastructure is lacking. As against this economies of many countries of the world like Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines and Switzerland are thriving because of the due attention given to the tourism sector. It is time that federal and provincial governments make concerted efforts to develop the required infrastructure and facilities and create conducive atmosphere for tourism development.

For tourism to flourish, first Pakistan has to do more on Image makeover as security is major concern for tourists. Even pickpockets, thieves in a tourist destination can keep people away from certain places, we can imagine the prejudice foreigners has about security.

Start should be on domestic tourism industry. This will create small businesses related to Tourism and artifacts according to tourist place which will result in more publicity strategy.

Adventure sports in secure regions can certainly benefit this industry.

One of the most important is High Level Security of Historical Monuments.

The towns nearby and cities should be taken more seriously in terms of security and modern facilities.

Wild life reserves and sanctuaries are way important as documentaries are made too frequently about animals, birds etc. and it certainly attracts foreign tourists especially.

heh. article about tourism and they call the very tourist they hope to get as "foreign invaders". right away the ones with deep pockets to come to Pakistan, Americans , Europeans , NATO countries are not welcome Meanwhile the very same foreign invaders is keeping Pakistan afloat economically through IMF loans .
