Pakistan’s first heart transplant surgery next month

ISLAMABAD: The first heart transplant surgery in the history of the country will be performed at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), Rawalpindi, next month by a team of surgeons headed by Major General Azhar Mahmood Kiyani, the AFIC commandant and head of the National Institute of Heart Diseases (NIHD).

All arrangements for the first heart transplant surgery, which will start at around 2:30 hours have been completed. The success ratio of heart transplant surgery is 90 percent while 70 to 80 percent of the patients can survive for at least another 10 years after undergoing heart transplant. The patient, who had undergone heart transplant surgery in Britain, 13 years ago is still alive and living a healthy life.

The heart transplant surgery costs Rs10 million in Britain while it will be possible at the AFIC at the cost of just Rs0.8 million to Rs1 million. The first heart surgery was performed by Dr Bernard in Cape Town city of South Africa in 1967 while an Egyptian Muslim doctor, Sir Ramzi Yaqub, successfully performed the first heart transplant surgery in the early 1980s in Britain.

In Saudi Arabia, the heart transplant surgeries are performed in King Faisal Specialist Hospital since 1986, while the heart transplant surgeries started in India and Iran in 1993 and 1995, respectively. At the AFIC not only arrangements have been made for heart transplant, rather the training of the anaesthetists and pathologists is even better than the set standard. The matching of the blood groups of the donor and beneficiary will be necessary while a comparative genetic study on the two will also be conducted.

@Akheilos

I know you are reading this.
People at AFIC are determined to get this honor now.The commandant AFIC told the president of Pakistan about that during a conference. The greatest hindrance in this step is the Molana hazrat. But Major Gen.Shahab Naqvi sahib has completed all the ground work ,thanks to the team of doctors at AFIC.
They have done the TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) just recently.Next goal is to achieve a successful heart transplant.

Thanks for the update...90% of the population doesnt give a crap about Molana: they drink, fornicate, adulterate, rape, kill and the list is endless but when it comes to advancement the bloody molana becomes a prophet?

Can't go deep into it right now.
You are correct we all know that what are the actual ground realities.

In the last case, when almost all the training and procedures reached to the level of completion.During the process of informed consent and all, a maternal uncle of the donor hijacked all the process and the parents of donor who solely convinced by those religious species that it's "haram" and all.And the parents and their families will be answerable for not taking up the case. You just say a word "Haram" and people will start blindly rejecting every sensible logic that is there to counter the argument of that Moulana sahib.

Up till now( since they have started with their research department) the stats say that 45 patients who were waiting for a heart transplantation has died at A.F.I.C/NIHD. People opt for it because most of them can't afford the expense or the trouble to travel abroad. But we have these self appointed Apostle who care more about hammering people out of the Diara E Islam.

I'm very hopeful for this time though,as now it seems that the institute has shown it's commitment for the task with not only fulfilling the prerequisites on their part, but also by preparing the grounds and defending their case in the form of informative material for the patients ,awareness walks organized by Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), debates /conferences in which these Molana Huzraut were invited to participate as well ,which they did.Lots of misconceptions were addressed.

Well a quote comes to mind ,they say," if you still want to see the hot chicks after you die, then donate your eyes and if you are a true lover of humanity then donate your heart".:D

Outside of AFIC, are there other hospitals that do Cardiac Bypass? Will you please list a few across Pakistan for me if you know for sure they do it?

CABG (Coronary artery Bypass graft) is very common procedure, lots of institutions in both government and private sector do it routinely. So, the list is long.To start with you can pick some renowned cardiac institutes/ tertiary care hospitals.
Few examples without any order.

Shifa international Islamabad.
Kulsum international hospital
AFIC/NIHD
P.I.C. (Punjab institute of cardiology)
Aga Khan University Hospital karachi.
NICVD karachi.
And many more.

Few are still developing such facilities such as Tahir heart institute Chenabnagar.

I knew about AFIC and Shifa Trust. What about some names in cities as Lahore, Quatta, Peshawer, Faysalabad, Gajran wala, Sealkot? I am trying to see if there has been focus on other cities and industry hubs also. Thank you for providing me such interesting info!

I haven't visited Quetta (Bolan Medical complex), and i don't think they do it.
P.I.C. is in Lahore that i have mentioned already
In Faisalabad there is a Faisalabad institute of cardiology that has got such a facility.
In Sialkot there is a private institute that ventures only in the interventional cardiology department but not in open heart surgery, that too i guess is in the pvt. sector.
Peshawar, the lady reading hospital has got a cardiovascular surgery department that may have such a facility.
Others are, Rawalpindi institute of cardiology and Multan institute of cardiology that do it for sure.

Thank you for providing me such interesting info!
Welcome!
