Pakistans efforts against Taliban successful: US
* White House national security adviser says too soon to say if Afghan plan working
WASHINGTON: Acknow-ledging widespread public support behind the Pakistani governments ongoing military operation in Malakand, White House National Security Adviser James Jones on Wednesday described the countrys effort as impressively successful.
Speaking at a forum at the Atlantic Council, he said the US was heartened to see in Pakistan a new and comprehensive and so far impressively successful effort by the Pakistani army to react to its challenge by the Taliban, APP reported.
He added it was premature to gauge results of the revamped US strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, but its prospects for success should become clear within a year. With the right metrics and the right benchmarks, I think we should know within in a year whether this strategy is going to be successful, Jones said.
Asked whether the international community was winning in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Jones said, Its a little early to tell.
He added the US strategy involved much more than military victory, Reuters reported.
Its not about how many troops you put on the ground. Its whether you can achieve security, economic development and governance and the rule of law simultaneously, Jones said. Its a three-pronged approach that will serve us well if we do it well, he added. agencies
