Pakistan relief organisations 'discriminating against Christian flood victims'

Relief organisations in Pakistan are discriminating against Christians when they distribute flood aid, the Vatican said on Friday, as one million more people were displaced by fresh floods.

Christians and members of other minority religions are being treated as second-class citizens, said Father Mario Rodrigues, the Lahore-based director of Catholic Mission.

"They often receive little assistance or are excluded altogether," he told Fides, the Vatican's news agency.

Aid is being delivered by "government officials sympathetic to Islamic fundamentalism or by Muslim relief organisations", Fides claimed in its report, citing other unnamed aid workers.:hitwall:

About 200,000 Christians in Punjab province and about 600,000 Christians and Hindus in Sindh province have been affected by weeks of monsoon rain.

At least 1,600 people have been killed in the country's worst natural disaster, and on Friday, officials warned that the death toll was expected to rise significantly as many people remained missing.

Over the past two days, fresh floods from the surging river Indus smashed through levees in two places, forcing one million people from their homes.

Ahmad Kamal, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority, denied the accusations of prejudice.

"We have no discrimination, no requirements, no checklist. Aid goes to everyone," he said.

However, Nazir Bhatti, President of the Pakistan Christian Congress, urged donors to make special provisions for Christians.

"I appeal to organisations and countries which are giving aid to government of Pakistan for flood victims to allocate separate or special funds for Christian flood victims and transfer it to Caritas Pakistan or Bishops Conference of Pakistan for food, tents and medical facilities," he said in a statement.

In all, some eight million people need emergency help and the monsoon season is due to last another three weeks.

Denying minorities flood aid shows how low Pak as a nation has stooped to: Editorial
2010-08-28 17:10:00

Amid the massive humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, reports have emerged about how local authorities are discriminating in relief and rescue operations on the basis of caste, which is utterly shameful for a country which boasts of a democratic set-up.

Days ago reports revealed that the Pakistani administration was neglecting people belonging to the minority Ahmedia sect amidst the devastating floods, which has inundated nearly one-fifth part of the nation.

Now, the state's even more dirty face has been uncovered with Hindus and Christians complaining of discrimination against them at a time when the raging flood waters have snatched all their belongings rendering them homeless and also hopeless.

An editorial in one Pakistan's leading English dailies slammed the Pakistani government for turning a blind eye towards the plight of the minorities in the country amid the devastating floods.

The Daily Times editorial stated that by neglecting the minorities in this hour of crisis, Pakistani authorities have only earned more disgrace for themselves from the world.

"This is in clear violation of all humanitarian norms as well as our constitution. We saw Hindu families helping out flood victims in Sindh irrespective of religion, caste or creed, but when our state discriminates against its own citizens on the basis of religion, it shows how low as a nation we have stooped to," it said.

The editorial called on both the country's leadership and masses to stop this religious nepotism, which has prevailed in the country since its emergence, if it wants to progress as a nation.

"Humanity is conspicuous by its absence. If we want to progress as a nation, we need to close the doors on our prejudices. For far too long we have let religious bigots call the shots; now is the time to stand up to them and say no to religious exclusivism," it said.

That is a load of nonsense. Zakat is for all humans. You give Zakat in the name of Allah not only for muslims.

“Verse 60 of surat 9 (At-Tawbah) does not confine the category of poor and needy to Muslims. Hence, it is evident that Zakah MAY BE GIVEN TO MUSLIM AS WELL AS NON-MUSLIM POOR AND NEEDY. As for the payment of Zakah to non-Muslim poor and needy, I have to add that I had in mind Christians and Jews and whoever we treat similarly such as Hindus and Zoroastrians (as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to treat them like the People of the Book) who live with Muslims peacefully. The permissibility is limited to this category.

a.) The above news is from independent International source a British newspaper. why blame India??????

b.) They have clearly mentioned the source and that is credible too "Father Mario Rodrigues, the Lahore-based director of Catholic Mission" So no unnamed news report.

So how can deny what "Father Mario Rodrigues" from Lahore-based director of Catholic Mission is saying??????

4. Everybody will believe Father Mario Rodrigues then you.

.
I believe Father mario Rodrigues, knows that none of the Pakistanis are getting anything except kicks from government. Its only army which is going out there and helping everyone without any distinction or discrimination.

Rest about the aid workers at this time most of the countries have sent their own personnel to manage it all, also the aid given to Pakistani is only 20% (directly handed over to government) rest 80% they are distributing through international community's own preffered international NGO's. Also, no Islamic organisation is is making any difference between delivering aid, its very easy to put a blame but the fact is when ever such claims are made they are hardly anythng than a mere report from some one sitting outside Pakistan.

And all that is available as an evidence is the tagline that it is a neutral source!!

I don't know where so called human sympathizers are sleeping when Pakistani government announces 100-200 thousand for an ordinary victim and upto 3-4 times for another victim just because he belongs to a minority group!!

You are right to some extent. Zakat is an important Islamic act of worship. It main focus to reduce poverty within the Muslim community. Non-Muslims aren't obligated to fulfill this act. It's only mandatory for Muslims. So main focus should be for Muslims only.

However Zakat money could be paid to non-Muslims if Muslims community become poverty free.

There are other form of charity for non-Muslims. Zakat should be excluded unless there isn't any poor Muslim left.
