ISLAMABAD: Pakistan hanged 324 people last year to rank third worldwide in terms of executions, but the vast majority of those put to death had no links to militant groups or attacks, rights groups said in a report seen by Reuters.

Pakistan lifted a moratorium on executions in late 2014 as a measure to deter militancy, after a Taliban gunmen attacked a school and killed 134 students and 19 adults.

Of the 351 executions that followed, only 39, or about 1 in 10, involved people linked to a known militant group or guilty of crimes linked to militancy, Reprieve, an international human rights group, and Justice Project Pakistan said in a report.

Pakistan now ranks after China and Iran, carrying out 324 hangings in 2015 alone, the report showed.

Juveniles, mentally ill prisoners, and prisoners who had been tortured or had not received fair trials were among those executed, the report found in an analysis of media reports and data from courts, prisons and legal teams.

"The numbers show that the Pakistan government's claims do not match reality," said Maya Foa, director of the death penalty team at Reprieve.

"Those going to the gallows are too often the poor and vulnerable," she said in a statement. "It is hard to see how hanging people like this will make Pakistan safer."

A spokesman from Pakistan's interior ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The government initially said the unofficial moratorium was only being lifted in cases connected to militancy, but it was later broadened to cover all cases, the report said.

The hangings have drawn condemnation from international partners but have been broadly popular at home.

Government officials told Reuters last year that the policy had been helping to deter militant attacks.

Militant, insurgent and sectarian attacks have fallen since 2014, though it is unclear whether the decline is linked to the change in execution policy, as it has also coincided with a military crackdown on militant strongholds.

Last year, attacks in Pakistan by militant, insurgent and sectarian groups were down 48 percent from 2014, an independent think-tank, the Pak Institute for Peace Studies, says.

Says a lot about their justice system , they execute more people than China , a country that's 11x their population.death penalty should be granted th the most extreme cases .

Lot of of pending since ages..

That's because of huge list of criminals with pending death plenty.
When Pakistan lift the ban (self imposed) on death plenty then of course a high rate of execution was expected.
Moreover Pakistan is dealing with terrorism scum, for that there is need for hanging terrorists......
Above all, I don't feel ashamed for government taking actions against such criminals....... showing mercy on criminal is another crime

That is very rich coming from an Indian. In your country rape against innocent women and violence against minorities is a daily affair. When are you going to hang the culprits instead of delivering a sermon on Pakistani justice system?

At least we are providing justice to the murderers. You on the other hand protect rapists and prevent international media from airing a documentary in your country.

This is bad news... we need to be #1 next time.

These humanitarian groups belong to countries which pressure Pakistan 24/7 to do more. Now that Pakistan has decided to hang the animals these mouthpieces are against their hanging. They come up with all sorts of excuses and lies. Unsatisfied with any solution or stance that Pakistan takes against terrorism. One wonders what these people actually seek from Pakistan. Yet, they wonder why we view them with suspicion...

The mark of a coward is that he's all too eager to abuse power when he receives a share of it. Ganja League.

Stop buying this foreign rubbish. I'm not a fan of ganjoo either, but the fact is that Pakistan has to get tough with child murderers and insane suicide attackers. This is just rubbish. What has the state to gain by hanging mentally ill and juveniles? Let's just get out of our prejudices for a moment and try to look at the bigger picture. We aren't doing nearly enough to exterminate this evil.

These human rights organizations are just mouthpieces that talk when someone tells them do so. Where are these human rights organizations when Pakistani children are attacked in schools or when US drone strikes kill entire families? Where is their outrage and protest to be found?

These human rights organizations can bugger off. Pakistan is going to do whatever needs to be done. Child killers and murders are going to receive the death penalty. An eye for an eye. Let's see how anyone can stop us from hanging these savages. The more they shout the more we hang.

You are asking the wrong person, rather you should be asking the people of Pakistan what they gain by rallying up against mentally ill and juvenile "murderers" "criminals" and "blasphemers" asking for their heads.

Whom to believe and whom not to, is purely my prerogative.

back on topic , its backward ideologies like unjust execution that keep a country back, most of the world is moving to reduce execution to a absolute minimum. , Someone who cant create a life has no right to take it, beside there are things worst than death in prison.

the numbers hardly makes a difference , taking the population difference into account
