Pakistan remains the least competitive country in South Asia when it comes to travel and tourism, according to the Travel and Tourism Competitive Report published by the World Economic Forum on Wednesday.

The report placed Pakistan at the bottom of the Asia-Pacific Travel and Tourism (T&T) Competitive Index 2019 rankings. Pakistan ranked 121 this year out of 140 countries against 124 in 2017.

The report emphasised that Pakistan still required substantial improvement in competitiveness to move up in rank and out of the bottom quartile.

In its pillar snapshot for Asia-Pacific region, the report said Pakistan was the most improved country in terms of human resources and labour market, whereas Singapore was the top scorer in this area.

Japan remains Asia’s most competitive travel and tourism economy, ranking fourth globally, recently witnessing a boom in international tourist arrivals and receipts. China is by far the largest travel and tourism economy in Asia-Pacific and 13th most competitive globally. The Philippines has shown improvement, moving up four places to rank 75 globally.

S. Asia is the only sub-region in Asia-Pacific to score below the global average for T&T competitiveness. Its strongest advantage relative to the global average comes from its price competitiveness and natural and cultural resources.

According to the report, S. Asia ranks low for infrastructure, with underdeveloped tourist service infrastructure representing its greatest relative disadvantage. Low ICT readiness, international openness, safety and security and health and hygiene are other key weaknesses.

However, S. Asia also experienced one of the fastest rates of improvement since the last edition of the report, including the greatest sub-region percentage jump in scores on ICT readiness.

. . . . . . .
They literally started it in April and May of this year.
You think they can overturn 40 years of neglect in 4 months?

PM U-Turn also promised a huge news in regards to off-shore oil drilling in early April. Not sure what happened to that "Good news".

PM U-Turn also promised 5 million new houses in just 5-years. But after a year in office not a single house has been constructed.

Talk about a liar.

You know these sort of rants are much better suited to twitter. Rather than derailing threads, you should tweet this. Or create a seperate thread to slate the PM on.

Not surprised Pakistan isn't very competitive for tourism. We've hardly tried for years and years. I don't know what these people measure but there are some things Pakistan could improve.

What are we doing well?
  • We have airbnb, uber, Careem, booking.com, skyscanner so the net savvy traveller can get around and book tours.
  • We have a good road network.
  • Food is cheap and there is great cuisine, big name brands are present
  • A lot of people speak English
What we need to improve
  • public transport is not great and tricky to navigate. should be at least linked to google maps and e-booking for tickets.
  • Good hotels are expensive, poor hotels are abundant.
  • Health and safety is completely absent from the food market. We don't want to get a reputation, like Delhi belly.
  • drinking water is unsafe
  • Not enough people speak english outside of the bigger cities and towns. Tourists in rural areas will struggle.
  • We can't do online booking for tickets to historical sites
  • We don't have a big presence on trip advisor
  • We don't have many big tour operators or deals with tour operators abroad
  • prices aren't fixed in many places/shops
  • in rural areas people aren't acustomed to tourists. in and around regions where we expect tourism we should provide locals some cultural sensitivity training
  • our government website isn't very good, doesn't provide travellers cultural sensitvity training or other handy tips.
The easier we make travelling in Pakistan, the cheaper it is, the more likely we are to get tourists.

Whatever happened to PM Khan's tourism drive? Another flop policy.

Yeah Pakistan would've turned into Amsterdam under a full year of IK. We'd be having bong while riding our chingchi's and a hookers magazine onboard the PIA on a direct flight to Lahore from NY.
