Pakistan produces 2.2 million motorcycles in 2016

KARACHI: Motorcycle production in the country reached its highest level with 2.2 million units produced during 2016, up by 18.53 percent as compared to 1.9 million motorcycles produced in 2015.

Detailed assessment of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) latest data reveals that motorcycle production, including locally made Japanese brand and Chinese made imported motorcycles' brand, stood at 2,267,468 units in 2016 while 1,912,944 units were produced in 2015.

Industry experts attributed this splendid growth in production of motorcycles to lower oil prices and an improved business environment which has provided a much needed boost to the motorcycle industry in the outgoing year because these two wheelers have been become a popular choice for Pakistanis to commute amid the lack of public transport facilities in the country.

There are more than 60 motorcycle makers in the country with Honda still leading the market by a notable margin. Motorcycle manufacturers produced over 175,000 motorcycles per month on average, indicating a rapid increase in the usage of the transport vehicles.

However, economical Chinese made motorcycles turn out to be the most deadly form of transport, massively contributing to road traffic accidents. With substandard parts - a low quality chassis used in motorcycle assembly - the motorcycles often do not meet safety standards.

According to a report, road accidents in Pakistan have taken a horrible toll in the last 10 years as 15 people are killed daily in road and traffic accidents in the country. The study found that out of 3,375 road accidents which occurred in the last six months, road traffic accidents between motorcycles amounted to 2,787 and affected around 4,122 people. The percentage of road and traffic accidents involving motorcycles during the last six months was 83 percent. Similarly, Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) depicted a growth of 7.0 percent in

December 2016. Growth was observed in all the significant high weight sectors with the exception of textiles and fertilizers which displayed subdued growth. This takes cumulative growth to 3.9 percent year on year (YoY) for the first half of the fiscal year 2016-17.

In specific terms, the automobile industry experienced an increase due to a rise in production of tractors (447 percent YoY), trucks (52.1 percent YoY) and buses (43.2 percent YoY). However, the performance was dragged by LCV's (-38.8 percent YoY).

113 Motorcycle Manufacturing Units Registered In Country: Senate Told

Minister for Industries and Production Ghulam Murtaza Khan Jatoi Friday informed the Senate that 113 units of motorcycles manufacturing were registered across the country out of which 38 were closed.

Replying to a question during Question Hour, the minister said that motorcycles companies were included Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki (Japanese) and Chinese companies.

Murtaza Jatoi said that currently, the companies which producing passengers cars included Pak Suzuki Company (Karachi), Honda Atlas Company (Lahore) and Toyota Indus Company (Karachi). The minister conceded that the automobile industry was facing slow down growth.

Giving year wise details, the minister said that cars production in 2012-13 was 120,332, in 2013-14 116,605, in 2014-15 152,524 and in 2015-16 179,944, while motorcycles manufacturing in 2012-13 was 1,657,411, in 2013-14 1,703,106, in 2014-15 1,775,682
and in 2015-16 1,870,382.

To another question, the minister said that Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) was on privatization list of the government. The minister said that efforts were underway to privatize or
lease out the entity but the final decision would be taken by the Privatize Commission.

To a question about the quality of Hunda Civic Car, the minister said that as informed by M/s Honda Atlas Cars Pakistan Ltd, the statement was not true since the company has been winning the Best Quality Award in Asia Oceania Region for last six years.

Further, the new Civic model being assembled locally was of international quality and was well accepted in Pakistani market, he added. The minister said that substantial back orders and increasing trend of demand have forced the company to operate second shift from December 2016.

He said the government was facilitating manufacturers of car components through concessionary imports of raw material, sub-component required for the manufacturing and assembly of auto parts.

The minister said that different car manufacturing companies including Renault, Foton, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai have shown interest to set up their manufacturing plants in Pakistan.

Murtaza Jatoi said the matter was being processed and hoped that investment would come to Pakistan as a result of setting up of these plants.

He said that Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) was the organization responsible for quality control of cars being manufactured in the country.

About the steps to enhance the production of the engineering sector, the minister said the government has announced Automotive Development Policy (ADP) – 2016-21 to attract investment in greenfield for installation of new automotive plants and brownfield investments for revival of closed down units in automobile manufacturing for enhancing production of automobile products including the Cars/LCVs and HCVs by providing various incentives to the sector.

Just how has it been determined that Chinese motorcycles in particular are more deadly than other makes of motorcycles? This seems to be an intentional slur not backed by any data.

Maybe by data compilation from Pakistan police/emergency services regarding vehicle in incident?

May be, but I do not think the make and model of every motorcycle is recorded after an accident, and that Chinese motorcycles are more prone due to poor quality than others to be involved. This is a dubious claim.

Well you get what you pay for. There have been issues worldwide with the low end Chinese bikes (as would be with low end bikes sourced from any country):

I don't think the Chinese bikes would be any more or less inferior in quality than bikes available at such pricepoints (in effect its why they are in that pricepoint). To make things cheaply, you can only extract out of labour differential so much....to get the utter lowest available....it comes out of production process quality, QA, QC, even materials...so in the end you have to be wary when you get a too good to be true deal for any product (esp if it involves personal safety).

I mean the Japanese also exported some horrendous bikes back in the day till Honda set the quality bar "sweet spot" with the super cub in the late 50s and 60s. Same case of getting what you pay for. Mid end and high end chinese bikes would of course be priced a lot higher and be of appreciable sturdier and safer build today....and broadly comparable with the world market suppliers in their same pricepoints.
