DHAKA, Bangladesh

In a rare move, Pakistan’s top diplomat in Bangladesh on Friday praised the contributions of the Muslims of Bengal in the creation of Pakistan.

“Their efforts are very well documented both in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Today, we remembered all our leaders and prayed for their souls,” Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, Pakistan’s high commissioner in Dhaka, told Anadolu Agency while speaking on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day of the country.

Pakistan’s High Commission in Dhaka on Friday also celebrated the day through recitation from the Quran and raising the country’s national flag to the tune of the national anthem.

Due to the prevailing coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh, the program, however, was held with limited participation.

Pakistan got independence from the British on Aug. 14, 1947. Until 1971, Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan.

Recalling the struggles of the Muslims in the then Bengal province, Siddiqui added: “The leaders of Bengal – Nawab Sir Saleemullah, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, A. K Fazlul Haq, Moulvi Tamizuddin, among several others, are part of glorious history of our struggle for Pakistan.”

Referring to relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, he added that both countries “share unbreakable bonds of history, religion and culture. I am sure these bonds will become even stronger in the days ahead.”

Frosty relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have only recently begun thawing, with observers saying China has a role in mediation.

Last month, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke to his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina over the phone.

Bengal Muslims were on the forefront of making effort for Pakistan. Most Punjabis and Sindhis became Pakistani without any effort. Bengali were educated and smart people. We would have been way ahead if East Pakistan was still part of Pakistan.

Irrelevant, I never said we hate Jinnah, We just refuse to worship him.

As a group, We fought the british occupiers more than any other ethnicity, to tame us, they broke our backs with deliberately induced famines.

Jinnah is one man and his achievements and contributions are acknowledged and respected but that does not discount the fact that bengalis did the heavy lifting for Independence, No clue what you're on about.

I suggest you read the history of Britain and Bengal, You will learn a thing or two and more importantly you'll learn why they used famines as a weapon to rein us in.

you exactly know what im on about here.dont pretend it.. We know how much "good feelings" Bengalis have against their first founding father..Majority of Bengalies will either have no view or extreme disgust...

I never heard of any protest like this, finding obscure photos proves nothing.

We know more about modern day Pakistani political figures than Jinnah.

I already admitted long ago that I'm indifferent at best to Jinnah, I refuse to worship that man.

We have bigger heroes than him in Bengal, get offended at that, If you want, makes no difference to me.

We have national heroes going back 200 years, who fought the British tooth and nail, we have no shortage of 'figures'.

Btw this is a protest organised by paid goons from the ruling Awami League, nobody cares what they do or say in Bangladesh, I'm telling you now in no uncertain terms the population of Bangladesh is indifferent to Jinnah.

Awami Dogs seem to be staging a protest against Khaleda Zia and just propped a effigy of the first Pakistani figure that came to their mind.

Don't know why you are so fussed about Awami League, we all already know they are anti pakistan, a drama just to gain some votes from the minorities.

Hence Pakistani elite had a problem with them

even after East Pakistan became Bangladesh there were some Bengalis still working in Pakistani Embbacy in DC and they were forces out. Their access was revoked, they were out of job and out of country (they were not considered Pakistani even if they were loyal to Pakistan). Soon after Bangladeshi Embbacy was established in DC and they were hired by Bangladeshi government.
