Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Sunday rejected the idea of an “independent Kashmir”, saying it was not based on “reality”, according to a media report. Abbasi was addressing a conference on ‘Future of Pakistan 2017′ held at the London School of Economics’ South Asia Centre here.

After his address, the prime minister responded to a range of questions on topics from Afghanistan, civil-military ties, disqualification of his predecessor Nawaz Sharif, to relations with India and the Kashmir issue.

On a question about “independent Kashmir”, the prime minister said “the idea is often floated around but has no reality”, Geo TV reported.

“There is no support for the demand for independent Kashmir,” he claimed.

Talking about ties with India, Abbasi said relations between the two countries cannot improve till the Kashmir issue is resolved.

“Talks are the only way forward, without talks no quantum change is possible,” he said.

To another question, he said though the judiciary had removed Sharif as prime minister, “however we have left it to history to judge whether history accepts the judgment or not”.

He also said that most of Pakistan does not agree with Sharif’s disqualification by the Supreme Court.

Sharif was disqualified as premier by the apex court on July 28 in the Panama Papers scandal.

On US-Pakistan relations, Abbasi said they should not be defined by Afghanistan alone.

The prime minister also presented a positive picture of Pakistan’s economy and claimed there has been a marked improvement in every economic field since 2013.

No doubt Kashmirs people wants either to join Pakistan or having a independent county. It's unlikely Pakistan will like a independent county born from Indian occupied Kashmir as that will ultimately push out Pakistani control Kashmir through which CPEC going. Best option is Kashmir joining Pakistan with greater control over their territory.

I agree to one point by the PM of Pakistan, Kashmir cannot be independent. There has been a lot of noise emanating from Pakistan that let Kashmir be independent state. It is good that India and Pakistan are on the same page as regarding Independence of Kashmir.

Also let the Kashmiris be clear on what Pakistan wants with regard to Kashmir. There are many separatists in Kashmir live with a illusion that claim that Pakistan is OK with independent Kashmir.

. .
If a independent Kashmir is not feasible and one really wants to resolve this issue, then the only possibility is a unified pre-1947 India.

Now with CPEC passing through Kashmir, Pakistan would never agree for an independent Kashmir. It would rather latch on to the only part of Kashmir that it has. So let all the Kashmir separatists including pro independent separatists such as Mirwaz, Yasin Malik and pro independent terror group such as Hizbul Mujahidin know that Pakistan's opposition to independent Kashmir.

Unified pre-1947 India will never happen. It is impossible now.

A independence Kashmir is not on the cards because not enough Kashmiris support it!

Across both sides of Kashmir it will be a clear victory for joining Pakistan

With independence vote or india vote trailing far behind

According to BBC survey '44% of people in Pakistani-administered Kashmir favoured independence, compared with 43% in Indian-administered Kashmir'. So there is a major chunk that want independent.

Except Geelani, major separatist groups are pro independent.

Let them decide to join Pakistan or have an independent country

Its tiny, really tiny

We are part and parcel of Kashmiri diaspora, I have been all over Azad Kashmir and there is kashmiri community from indian area too

This is what im telling you

Indians are hated because they are hindus and don't represent Kashmir faith, culture, language or ethnicity, dont disregard an age old dislike of hindus when it comes to opposing india

Independence will garner no more then 10%-15% and even they would back Pakistan if it was a choice against india

In any free and fair vote across all of Kashmir, Pakistan would be a clear majority victor and it wouldn't even be close
