Pakistan plans to take US drone issue to UN

Pakistan says it plans to take the issue of US assassination drone attacks on its territory to the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Pakistani sources said on Sunday that Islamabad will also contact with the Human Rights Commission to discuss the drone strikes.

The move came days after UN Special Rapporteur Ben Emmerson announced the launching of an investigation by UN experts to inspect 25 terror drone attacks carried out in Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories by the US, UK and Israel.

The UN official further said that the assassination drones are not the only manner of conducting targeted killings, “but the relative ease with which they are used and their devastating effects have spotlighted the legal unease around them,” the report adds.

Ties between Pakistan and the US have already been tense over the air raids which are viewed by Islamabad as violation of its sovereignty.

Last week, Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar expressed concern over the US assassination drone strikes in her country, describing them as “counterproductive.”

“We repeatedly have raised our concerns on the US drone strikes which are proving counterproductive…,” she said in a statement released on January 22.

Referring to thousands of Pakistani civilians who have been killed by CIA-operated drones in recent years, she went on to say that Islamabad “will take up drone attacks issue with Washington and its ambassador to Pakistan.”

Pakistan’s tribal regions are attacked by US terror drones almost regularly, with Washington claiming that militants are the targets. However, casualty figures clearly indicate that civilians are the main victims.

Despite Pakistan’s repeated calls on the US to end the drone attacks, the US government continues its deadly strikes on the country’s tribal belt.

Over the past few months, massive protests have also been staged across Pakistan to condemn the United States for violating the country's sovereignty.

The US military also uses its assassination drones to hit targets in Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen and Afghanistan.

Why wait till September? Its just a hogwash, trying to fool people.

Yake it to United Nations and say WHAT ?

That the US has been bombing our citizens with our permission ?

The Scumbag Zardari govt. does not have a leg to stand on.
That is most likely correct, both PA and GOP approves the strike and protest for fooling people.

the same people are permitting those attacks, they are not letting pak army to kill those drones

It's still the right thing to do. We will shoot down those drones and we will also bring it up to UN.

I'd like to make an important point here.

The day Pakistan army is allowed to safely operate from North Wazirastan, drone attacks will stop. Drone attacks are now happening in only 2 tribal agencies where Taliban insurgents are constantly attacking and killing Pakistani soldiers who want to establish permanent presence there.

We in Pakistan let these tribals to their own devices for the last 70+ years. We said these guys can govern their own area so why should we impose our army and our police on them.

Guess what? That approach even though worked for early decades but unfortunately turned out to be wrong in the end.

These tribals must make an effort and support building of new cantonments and new forts to house Pak soldiers and police officers.

If Pak army and police cannot enter and operate safely from an area, then by default that area loses any claims of protection by the same army.

Sad to say, Pakistan has no other option but to persuade China to boycott the US.

if pak army want to do something in Pakistan, then no govt will be able to stop them so lets not be in delusion that it's because of civilian govt and army is a holy cow.

I beg to differ my dear Sir.

Drone strikes happen with permission from both Pak politicians and Pak army.

Ideally Pak army would love to use the drones on Talib-bozos. Because cobra helicopter or F-16 based aerial attacks are much more expensive and much less precise.

As we don't have drone tech, we are working with USA to kill the mofo Talbi-bozos.

In most cases US and Pak armies coordinate such attacks by sharing advance intelligence and ground based info.

Isnt this plan in the hopper for last couple years? Why the wait ?

UN already said that a probe will be launched to investigate death due to drone attacks. The decision was taken due to Pakistan, China, Russia asking this for UN for not only Pakistan but also in other countries like Yemen.
