Pakistan not doing enough to combat terrorism: Germany

Germany today said Pakistan is "not doing enough" to combat terrorism, noting that the situation in that country is an issue of "central concern" to it.

Addressing a news conference ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin this Saturday, German ambassador Thomas Matussek said the internal situation in Pakistan is "unstable."

Matussek said it would in the interest of the international community if the Pakistan security apparatus "chase out" al-Qaeda and other terror elements from the country.

"The situation in Pakistan is an issue of central concern to us. The internal situation in Pakistan is unstable. Pakistan is not doing enough to combat terrorism," he said.

Besides bilateral issues, the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan and counter terrorism strategies will be on the agenda of Singh-Merkel summit when the Prime Minister flies to Berlin for a brief visit after attending the Indo-European Union(EU) summit in Brussels on Friday. Singh leaves for Brussels this Thursday.

The ambassador said inputs relating to the terror threat in Germany were also shared with Indian intelligence officials.

Matussek's comments came against the backdrop of American and European officials having recently detected a plot to carry out a major, coordinated series of commando-style terror attacks in Britain, France, Germany and possibly the US.

The new threat to France, Germany, Britain and to the US is coming from Pakistan, according to western intelligence officials. Several teams of attackers, all with European passports, had been reportedly trained and dispatched from training camps in Pakistan and in Waziristan on the ****** border.

Replying to questions, Matusset said the security and stability of Afghanistan is directly linked to Germany's own security.

In Matusset's view, the Pakistan Army cannot play any role to bring stability in Afghanistan.

"We cannot use Pakistan Army to stabilise Afghanistan," he added.

Matusset also made a strong pitch for India and the 27-nation European Union(EU) to evolve joint strategies to fight terrorism.

He is not talking about India's concerns related to LeT, Kashmir supports etc but totally regarding Afghanistan, Germany-NATO forces there and Pakistan. He is talking for his country's interests not India's. If he had made similar comments about LeT etc than it would have been another case.

Germany needs to stop their bitchingg and get their act together. Failures of NATO and ISAF cannot be blamed on Pakistan. Besides Kabul, there is no central government and law and order at all. War lords are funded with drug money and arms, Afghanistan is a country too screwed up to even function as one unit.

what is happening in afghanistan is not entirely pakistan's fault. the present gulture of drugs and war lords was started and funded by CIA with the help of ISI and saudi intelligence. their sole aim was to start a resistance against USSR. when USSR left afghanistan pakistan emerged as a major power in afghanistan.

it slowly took control of afghanistan through taliban. remember pakistan was one among a few countries to support taliban.

when US led international forces attacked afghanistan to take out osama bin laden, pakistan had to reluctantly support them.

now this would have been very difficult for GoP. after all only some days back they were actively backing the government. so pakistani govt perfected the art of "hunting with the hounds and running with the hares". while at top level it showed and promised cooperation, at the field level the cooperation continued.

pakistan knows if international force fails in pakistan, then again pakistan will once again emerge as dominant force. pakistan is playing a waiting game. allowing international forces to bleed so that their exit is hastened.

i think more than blaming pakistan so called international powers need to have a re-look at their role in afghanistan.
