Pakistan military exercises not directed at India, says China.

China’s Ministry of National Defence on Tuesday said annual joint military exercises with Pakistan, due to be held next week, were "not targeted at any third nation" and were drills focused on combating terrorism, rejecting Indian media reports which said the exercises were aimed at India.

The exercises, the Ministry said in a statement, were part of an annual exchange between the two militaries, and would take place near Islamabad.

"This is the first joint drill of the two armies this year and is not targeted at any third nation,” the Ministry said in a statement issued to the official China Daily newspaper.

"It is aimed at enhancing the capability of the two militaries to handle non-traditional security threats and launch joint anti-terror activities," the statement added.

The China Daily said the announcement of the exercises had caused a media “frenzy” in India, pointing to recent reports in Indian newspapers which said drills, to be conducted along the border, were part of a Chinese plan to put pressure on India.

Fu Xiaoqiang, a scholar at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, a State-run think-tank, described the media reports as “groundless” and based on “hearsay evidence”.

"[The Indian media] always wear blinkers to examine China’s cooperation with Pakistan,” he told the China Daily. “For example, we all know there are many Chinese experts and engineers in Pakistan working on large projects. It is the Indian media who linked that with security issues”.

A statement issued by the Pakistan Army’s Inter-Services Public Relations in October said the exercises, named Youyi-IV (or “Friendship”), were aimed at “mutual exchange of experience and information” and would “encompass techniques and procedures involved in Low Intensity Conflict Operations environment.”

The joint exercises, it said, were aimed at “sharing and enhancing expertise of both armies in countering terrorism.”

The exercises were started in 2004, with Pakistan becoming the first foreign army to conduct an exercise on Chinese soil, the statement said, adding that three exercises had been held since.

BEIJING: Brushing aside New Delhi media’s frenzy over joint anti-terrorism exercise, the Ministry of National Defence here has dismissed Indian reports that China and Pakistan are holding a joint military exercise to put pressure on New Delhi, and said the anti-terror drill is not targeted at any third country.

According to the annual exchange plan between China and Pakistan’s militaries, the two armies will hold the ‘Friendship 2011′ joint anti-terror exercise near Islamabad, The China Daily quoted the Information Office of the Ministry of National Defence.

“This is the first joint drill of the two armies this year and is not targeted at any third nation. It is aimed at enhancing the capability of the two militaries to handle non-traditional security threats and launch joint anti-terror activities,” the office said in a written reply.

The two-week exercise will begin on Nov 16, it said.

Fu Xiaoqiang, an expert on South Asian studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, while rejecting the report accused the Indian media of basing such reports on “hearsay evidence”.

“They always wear blinkers to examine China cooperation with Pakistan.

For example, we all know there are many Chinese experts and engineers in Pakistan working on large projects. It is the Indian media which linked that with security issues,” he said.

Premier Wen Jiabao suggested that the Indian media should stop overplaying security issues and make more positive efforts to improve bilateral relations, when he visited the country last year.

The premier said that, in recent years, there has been no conflict in the China-India border area.

“But the border issue has been hyped as a rather serious problem.”

Every land exercise between China and Pakistan so far, have been at terrains that mimic Afghanistan or Xinjiang. Unless they start to do mountain warfare exercise, India is simply being paranoid. Actually, Indians have been paranoid since 1962.

Spoken like your government never complained about Sino-Pakistan relationship. Since we're so weak, you have nothing to worry about then.

True, but the statement is in context of Sino-Pak military exercise, which has nothing to do with India. We do many exercises with other friendly nations, there wasn't any hue & cry at that time that those exercises were meant for India. Thus just like those ones, this one isn't.

Yeah, when we do exercise all alone, that is India specific, just like how IA does those big Pakistan specific exercises.

.
haha, bring it on,US and China are also friends.two economies are so intertwined.
