NJ dad eyed in honor killing
NJ man sought by Pakistan in “honor” killing of daughter and son-in-law - NYPOST.com
A twisted, sick sense of honor compelled a Jersey City man to have his daughter and son-in-law brutally murdered alongside a Pakistani roadway, authorities there say.
New York native Uzma Naurin, 30, and her husband, Saif Rehman, 31, were ambushed during a shopping trip in Gujrat, Pakistan, on Nov. 1.
Rehman was shot dead by gunmen at the scene, and Naurin was driven away and killed later, said news reports.
Muzaffar Hussain, 58, is the prime suspect in the slayings, Pakistani authorities tell reporters.
He was in Pakistan at the time his daughter and son-in-law were killed but quickly left the country to return home to Jersey City.
Hussain was nowhere to be found yesterday. But he told the Daily Mail of London: If it turns out this was an honor killing, it would be horrific.
I had no idea this might happen, he told the paper.
Everything seemed fine. She was looking to start a family with Saif and have children together. Now theyre gone. All we can do is pray.
Pakistani police say they may seek Hussains extradition from New Jersey.
Naurin, a former Staten Island resident, wed Rehman in Glasgow, Scotland, last February, said BBC News.
The couple met at the wedding of a Rehman pal some years ago, said reports. Rehman was a Pakistani citizen, but had lived for years in Glasgow.
The couples marriage upset Naurins family for several reasons.
Naurins first husband committed suicide, and she had refused to enter an arranged marriage with her dead husbands brother.
Also, Rehman was from a lower caste, or social class, than the Naurin family, say some reports.
Friends and acquaintances said they believed the two families had recently come to terms with the marriage but Pakistani cops say their investigation has found otherwise.
Late last month, Naurin and Rehman traveled from their home in Glasgow to Pakistan to attend the wedding of Rehmans brother. Hussain was also invited to the wedding.
After the ceremony, Hussain, claiming to be ill, checked into a hospital.
His daughter and son-in-law rushed to his bedside. During their visit, Hussain told his driver to take the couple on a shopping trip.
While they were being driven around Gujrat, the driver left them and four gunmen pounced, the Daily Mail reported.
They killed Naurin and Rehman, but left unharmed Rehmans sister and her 2-year-old daughter, who were also in the car.
After the killings, Hussain left the hospital and drove to Karachi, from where he boarded a flight to New York. The driver was reportedly under arrest Thursday.
