KARACHI: MQM chief Altaf Hussain dropped a bombshell on the country’s political landscape last evening by demanding that the armed forces should take over power to fight the menace of terrorism due to which the country has literally come on the verge of collapse.
MQM leader is known for creating reverberations on the domestic and international fronts through his seemingly controversial statements.
But his latest statement came at a critical juncture when a politically-elected government is trying to deal with decade-old issue of terrorism through a so-called dialogue process.
“If people say that Altaf Hussain is inviting military rule, I don’t care….if elected government is not on the same page with the army to crush terrorism….then army should take lead and takeover to save Pakistan,” MQM chief said unequivocally speaking at Samaa TV program – Nadeem Malik Live on Tuesday.
These ‘politically incorrect’ remarks immediately received flak from political leaders of various parties, who said that this statement is ‘dangerous and anti-democratic.’
Irrespective of the fact that over 50,000 Pakistanis have perished due to terrorism since 2001, political wrangling over the use of military in North Waziristan has disappointed many.
Different political parties raised objections over the way dialogue process was carried forward while some segments, including the MQM, have taken a strong line and they are pushing for an all-out military action.
Just last Sunday, MQM held a massive public gathering in the heart of Karachi to show solidarity with the armed forces, demanding full-fledge military action against Taliban.
After all that we as a nation gone through these last 10 years and our failure to develop a consensus on how to deal with terrorism clearly shows that the country is going through a leadership crisis. We need a visionary leader who can unite the nation, who can lay down security and economic road maps and nurture public opinion, and above all who has the will to carry the nation forward selflessly.
As said earlier, MQM chief’s statement came at a ‘critical juncture’ of our national history. It is a do or die war for Pakistan and the country’s political leaders should back up the armed forces and come on the same page to get rid of terrorism.
And if this is not done soon, MQM’s ‘politically incorrect’ demand may soon become a demand of common Pakistanis who are tired of living a fearful life. – SAMAA
