Pakistan in peril of succumbing to Iran-style Islamic revolution: Study

Pakistan is in peril of succumbing to an Iranian-style Islamic revolution, an official US study has warned, saying that mushrooming fundamentalism in the nation is finding support from the army and intelligence.

Pakistan slipping into an Iranian-style Islamic revolution is described as one of the biggest threat to the world, the Quadrennial Defence Review Independent Panel has told the US Congress in its final report submitted last week.

It has expressed serious concern over increasing Islamic fundamentalism in the country that has its support in its army and the intelligence.

"Some 'associated movements' will pursue lesser and more local goals, with the biggest danger to Pakistan, where the ruling elite (including the army and intelligence services that helped create--continue to tolerate and aid--such groups) is vulnerable to an Iranian-style revolution that Islamists would exploit," the report said.

Appointed by the Congress, the Quadrennial Defence Review Independent Panel is charged with conducting an assessment of the assumptions, strategy, findings, and risks described in the Department of Defence's Quadrennial Defence Review (QDR).

The QDR, a report required by law and provided by the Defence Department to Congress, is intended to assess the national security environment over the next 20 years and identify the defence strategy, forces and resources required to meet future challenges.

After the Department of Defence issued this year's QDR on February 1, 2010, Secretary of Defence Robert Gates and Congress constituted an independent panel to review the report as part of the National Defence Authorisation Act of 2010.

Former Secretary of Defence William J Perry and former National Security Adviser Stephen J Hadley served as co-chairs on the Panel, and the Department of Defence asked US Institute of Peace to facilitate the Panel's work.

"Salafist 'jihadi' movements, wedded to the use of violence and employing terror as their primary strategy, will remain both an international threat to the global system and a specific threat to America and its interests abroad.

"This remains true even as current al-Qaeda leaders age and their goal of a restored caliphate becomes ever more impractical," it said.

According to the report, some of these groups will set their sights on the United States, as recent attacks linked to Yemen prove.

"The greatest risk to the United States is that weapons of mass destruction or the materials and expertise to produce them will find their way into the hands of fanatical, murderous jihadists," it said.

You made the blunder of posting an Indian link (even though the study in US). Now everyone will jump the gun and call names to Times of India as usual to escape the reality .

I just hope that this study doesn't become reality because unlike Iran's Shia based revolution, a revolution in Pakistan would mean crowning Taliban kings. Hopefully, there are enough moderate people there to withstand this growing fundamentalism.

True or not.

Oh god anything but that.

ANYTHING.
Seconded - It was becoming a reality in 2007 Lal masjid Siege but thankfully we gave a crushing reply to Mullahs.PS: I don't think Mullahs will ever be able to run this country unless of course they become servants of the real power holders (you know who i am talking about)

Are you willing to risk your own life and that of your family to stop such a takeover from occurring? The Iranian mullahs captured the Revolution by teaching the virtues of martyrdom to their followers, slaying all who could politically oppose them, and terrifying everyone else. What have you got?

I don't see that happening in the near future. There can be no comparison of Pakistan with Iran.

The study has a flashy headline but devoid of any concrete matter. It does not describe how such a revolution will take place and by whom.

If it means that it will be carried out by the TTP and other such terrorist organziations, than it won't happen. Not acceptable to the majority of the people. Even if one were to agree that Army supports extremists, to assume that they would be allowed to have the upper hand by the Army is not possible.

Despite the fact that extremisst pose a threat to the country, their back was broken first in Swat and then in other agencies. It goes to show that they will not be allowed to create a state within the state. Also, the study does not mention that Pakistan has a developing but vibrant democracy which Iran didn't have. An active judiciary, largely free press and civil society unlike in Iran.

Looks like a study-table study to me !

Revolution is imminet but against pro indian zardari regime.
India is extremely worried over growing unpopularity of zardari regime... which very well that indian involvement in killing of innocent Pakistanis will come to public.

I fail to understand how people overlook Zia's Islamization as a kind of Islamic revolution that destroyed the nation, we suffer because of his policies today.

Fundamentalism was his centre policy and all the good people were purged while extremists were promoted.

From what I have observed, a plan to move towards a more secular progressive nation is in works but dangers of Islamic revolution remain.

Pakistan is NOT IRAN. Period.

We have a far diverse society not a closed one like Iran

.
In this hour, Pakistan either needs Quaid E Azam or Kemal Pasha.

Unfortunately both are rested in peace.

You just derailed the thread.
Now please explain Islamic revolution of Zia!
What was forbidden? which shouldn't have been?
All i remember when he died BB came over and all rules remain prettymuch same and so on.

if Zia would have open nightclubs than some one would be blaming him for that!
BTW... red light areas continue to work, alcohol factories continue to run, films continue to be screened, i remember cinemas use to show **** english movies openly..... what was Islamic about it?

I think you did not lived in Pakistan while Zia was rulling!

.
I remember I couldnt get anything to eat in Ramzaan when Zia was there .. so yeah .. he destroyed this country ..

.
Yet another study of the demise of Pakistan. This time the Mullah thingy as a reason.

How many studies are they gonna do and how many deadlines are they gonna give for the demise of Pakistan ??

Aren't they tired yet ??

Can't they do something better and do a study on how to get the world on the right path or fix the blunder created by US ??

Wow....Do you get now?
This country is destroyed by BB and Sharif.

Why do we keep forgetting that we helped create this blunder.. actually most of the work was done by us ..
