Pakistan in crisis as 'creeping coup' unfolds

THE political crisis in Pakistan has deepened after the Government's anti-corruption agency sought a warrant for the arrest of the country's Interior Minister.

Officials from the National Accountability Bureau asked for permission to arrest Rehman Malik, the minister in charge of law and order and the war on terrorism.

The move followed a supreme court ruling last week that overturned an amnesty introduced by General Pervez Musharraf, the former president, to enable the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and her senior aides to return from exile in 2007.

Under the deal, more than 8000 cases, including corruption, were dropped.

A number of other leaders of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were also summoned to appear before the courts over long-standing corruption charges.

The latest blow for the Government came on Friday, shortly after the Defence Minister was stopped from leaving the country for an official visit to China.

The supreme court also urged the Government to invite the Swiss Government to reopen money laundering cases against Asif Ali Zardari, the President.

The scale of the crisis and the speed with which it has unfolded has prompted supporters of Mr Zardari to question the role of the judiciary and speculate on whether the army is behind the legal challenge to the Government. Some even spoke of a ''creeping coup'' unfolding.

''It's complete [judicial] control now,'' said Asma Jahangir, chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. ''The issue is whether the [democratic] system is going to pack up again.''

The National Accountability Bureau, the official anti-corruption watchdog, applied for an arrest warrant for Mr Malik on corruption allegations going back over a decade.

The court summoned Mr Malik to appear next month, after his lawyer gave an assurance the Interior Minister would attend the hearing.

Mr Malik had three cases dropped under the amnesty. One of the allegations involved the ''embezzlement'' of $US165,000.

On Thursday, Ahmed Mukhtar, the Defence Minister, was physically prevented from boarding a flight for an official visit to China.

The two ministers are key Western allies for Pakistan's role in the fight against al-Qaeda.

Mr Malik, Mr Mukhtar and Mr Zardari were all said to be beneficiaries of the rules that led to the wiping away of thousands of corruption charges.

Mr Mukhtar, however, claims that his name was mistakenly put on the list of beneficiaries.

PPP leaders suspect the judiciary has collaborated with the military in a move to oust Mr Zardari, who is unpopular among Pakistan's establishment. The army has repeatedly denied it has any intention to interfere in politics.

Well, it is not crisis, it is pretty good news Pakistan is in right directions to clean up mess-up and some mess-up need to be removal asap.

-NRO NULL and VOID by SC
-Rehman Malik and others should be arrested
-Public Awareness increased in better results including media, people, lawyers, and youth.

I am proud of the process and shall overcome difficulties, insha'Allah! :pakistan:

But how will democratic govt. function correctly then....????
You must give them sometime like 2-3 years to show themselves

. .
I think every other week someone writes about a coup in Pakistan. These media people seems to have run out of story. I have not heard of anyone predicting coup anytime.

. .
There is no coup in Pakistan. The angle that they are taking is so narcissistic. only thing they care is about how these Pro-Western Kleptocrats are going to be thrown out of power. At the same time they complain how corrupt Pakistan is and how it cant be trusted. Then they say the only strong institution in Pakistan is the army and when another institution tries to stand up and start working as it should they start making noise of a creep coup. There is no Coup going to happen. Because if we look at the judgment the supreme court made after they threw out the PCO. they said it is the job of the judiciary to protect the democratic system and that the doctrine of necessity is now going to be thrown out(this was by the way how all the courts actually legalized the coups that have happened in the past).
I think these are positive developments and zardari is afraid that he is going to lose is seat that is why he is going to destabilize the entire system.

When these are arrested, other democratic leaders will come in. There is no harm to democracy no matter what the outcome.

it's healthy.....

corruption is a cancer....it's time that there is proper accountability. You cannot white-wash your sins and put them under the rug.

It's bad lesson for the children.

When you break the law or mismanage funds or assets that DO NOT BELONG TO YOU, you should be punished. You must be punished.

The time is ripe for revolution of some sort in this country. A true democracy embraces law-abiding ideals.

Are you reffering to mid-term elections???
IF are then I may tell you that elections are not easy to undertake...
A lot of money, time and personnels are wasted....

Its not healthy for a economy like pakistan to undertake elections every 2 years...

. .
Priminister Yousuf Raza Gillani goverment will complete its five years but not the NRO ones

Zardari is making this about the entire party when it is not really about that. If he quits or if the ministers quite the government will still be in place and the party will still be in control of the government. this is the problem with all the parties in pakistan they are made around a personality not policies. if the personality comes under attack the party believes that everyone is under attack which is not true.
I say let the western press say whatever they want this is a time when pakistan is finally bring to account those who have stolen money from the people.
I do believe thought that there should be accountability across the board may it be the PPP, PML(N) or (Q), MQM, ANP, bureaucrats or ex or serving army personal. if this accountability is conducted only against the PPP then this would be a bad thing for pakistan and would actually hurt the democratic system in the country

.
its brilliant there will be minor crisis but its healthy for Pak, the judiciary has to take control and show all who is the boss here ..!

The judiciary must penalise all not just PPP all accused i.e political parties , army personal , bearucrats .

But it is constitutional and democratic. Whether or not people get to complete their 5 year term is up to the people and the parliament they get to vote in.
