Kanwal Qayyum, a Pakistani woman, is getting her life back after her husband splashed her with acid.

He did not want not want her to become an air hostess.

Her story, which has come to limelight, draws attention once again to the serious threat faced by women in South Asia from unchecked sale of acids.

Kanwal was 16 when she was married to her distant cousin. The man was not educated and did some menial jobs, before turning completely jobless and getting addicted to drugs. By then, they had 12 year old son and eight year old daughter.

Fearing for the future of her children, she got herself educated, started looking for jobs, and was lucky to get an offer from an international airlines.

It didn't go down too well with her husband. One day when she opened the door, he was there and he threw acid on her face after which all she could remember was the excruciating pain, notes Dawn.

The incident had completely shattered her face. She was left with xad no eyebrows, lashes or nose. Her own child didn't want to face her as she was scared.

A Pakistani NGO Depilex Smile again Foundation, which works with acid victims, introduced Kanwal to UK cosmetic surgeon Dr. Asim Shahmalak.

He travelled to Pakistan for two years to help the women like her. He rebuilt her eye brows and lashes by taking the hair from the back of her scalp and did her nose with the tissue taken from her thighs.

Dr Shahmalak says he wept on hearing the stories of women like her. He spent $50,000 on the treatment of Kanwal and 5 other acid attack victims, notes Metro. He also added what he does to help them is the most rewarding thing he could do.

As she got somewhat close to her old face back through surgeries, she became more confident and reunited with her family. She now plans to get married to a man who had stood by her.

She still needs a few more surgeries, which Dr Shahmalak is preparing for.

In India pakistan Bangladesh this vile act must be stopped by equally harsh punishment. Acid for acid.
Acid throwing has thankfully decreased in Bangladesh -

Bangladesh was the first country to pass a law banning acid violence, in 2002. Once known to be the country with the highest number of such attacks and the highest incident rates for women, it has since experienced a drastic drop in the frequency of acid assaults. Although the lower numbers cannot be directly attributed to the law, Selina Ahmed, the executive director of the Acid Survivors Foundation in Dhaka, the capital, said that it had an effect.

“People are much more aware about it, and to some extent enacting laws worked to reduce effectively acid attacks and the number of victims,” Ahmed said. In Bangladesh, acid attacks decreased dramatically to 59 occurrences in 2015 from 494 in 2002, according to Ahmed’s foundation.

The new law in Bangladesh imposes the death penalty for perpetrators of acid violence, yet changing people’s attitudes has been difficult. Acid violence in Bangladesh is influenced by underlying discriminatory practices inflicted on women and girls in general. Four to five attacks take place a month.

Ahmed said that this form of violence cuts across cultural and religious barriers and ultimately hurts a woman’s right to fully participate in society, which may be the attackers’ original intent. “It has the effect of denying women important rights, such as economic and social well-being, political participation, personal fulfillment and self-worth.”

Such a tragic incident. In our society People do not know how serious acid splashing is.In murder the victim dies and its over,he will not suffer after this. But in acid splashing the victim dies everday. He desperately awaits death.Think thousand times before doing anything like this.

very bad.If he is angry with her job he may simply divorce her instead of comiting such inhuman act.

Divorce is a better alternative then acid or injuring your life partner. Let them go if you don't trust them. They are human beings too , probably better than you, yourself.

He should have had divorced her. If he really didn't want his wife to be air hostess. He could find a new wife. Who didn't want to be one.
