The Pakistani government has extended to the end of June a deadline for the compulsory repatriation of more than 2 million Afghan refugees, officials said on Friday.

Afghans can now live in Pakistan for another three months, a period during which the process of their repatriation would be expedited, said Shaukat Aqdas, spokesman for a ministry that deals with the refugees.

Afghan refugees in Pakistan have faced an uncertain future since the country's cabinet earlier this year decided to expel all of them by the end of January. The deadline was then extended until the end of March.

The Afghan authorities and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) have in the past expressed reservations on the settlement of refugees in the war-hit regions. The UNHCR is currently undertaking the voluntary repatriation of around 1.4 million Afghans, most of them living in Pakistan since their country was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1979. The rest face involuntary expulsions after the June deadline. Pakistan has announced the expulsions of Afghan refugees several times in the recent past but these decisions were never followed through.

. . . .
I am not surprised. As long as PML-N is in these extensions will keep happening. I think they are keeping them short to observe Afghan government behavior. If push comes to shove Afghans can be expelled swiftly.

3 months later the news will read "Pakistan has decided to extend Afghan refugees status for three months". Another headline will read "Ghani lambasts Pakistan for supporting terrorism in Afghanistan". A third news headline will read "US demands Pakistan do more to fight against terrorism and support Afghanistan".

There you go ladies and gents. I might as well call myself Nostradamus now.

technically I am not against for Afghan to stay in Pakistan, but govt can't regulate it. As they failed to regulate number of cars in streets on lease (so every major city is crowded), gun control, free sim distribution (that is why we have all the terrorism, ransom activities).

Afghans are aggressive and criminal minded where they see any loop hole or relaxed environment. It is bcz they have seen 40 years pf conflict and their psyche is, take what you can get away with.
If govt can regulate, number, identity, location etc. then tax them for their stay along with UN support (but stupid govt can advocate this properly in foreign forums), and let them have properties on just LEASE like Saudi do.
It is good if they invest their time and money in Pakistan.

They are neighbors, we need them strong and prosperous for our sake too (besides brotherhood thing). Yes, they are are brothers, but you have to punish your REAL brothers too, if they go astray.
