Pakistan Switches Sides, Expanding Arms Allegiance With China and Leaving U.S. Behind

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is beefing up its arsenal of nuclear-capable missiles by embracing China as its new strategic arms partner and backing away from the U.S., analysts have told Fox News.

Pakistan earlier this month test-fired a nuclear-capable missile from an undisclosed location – the second in a month of try-outs for its short-range surface-to-surface Hataf 2 class rocket, co-developed with the Chinese. It was the latest in a series of arms collaborations between the two nations, which view their strategic partnership as a counterweight to a boldly confident India, which has American support.

Until the mid-1960s, the United States was the principal supplier of weapons to Pakistan, the world’s eighth most-powerful nuclear nation. But the U.S. began to back away from the relationship after years of difficult and sometimes unpredictable relations following the 9/11 attacks. The U.S. no longer fully supports the military ambitions of a Pakistan that is being destabilized by an insurgency it cannot control, rising radicalism and anti-Westernism, and a government considered by some too weak and corrupt.

That led Pakistan to replace the U.S. with China as a main source of defense material, at least in terms of arsenals, development and training.

“China is perceived as not coming with nearly as many strings attached as relations with the United States,” said Nate Hughes, director of military analysis at Stratfor, an intelligence website run by former CIA operatives.

This was starkly marked in November when on the same day the U.S. delivered some of the 18 F-16s it had pledged to Pakistan, Islamabad announced it had ordered an arsenal of SD10 mid-range homing missiles and radar systems to equip its JF-17 Thunder jet fighters from China.

More is on the way. China is scheduled to send Pakistan 250 JF-17s over the next five to ten years (deal signed for 42 only - rest is a plan for now), a $1.3bn deal (no deal so far - only a MoU signed) to buy J-10 fighters and a recent order (only talks have started) for six submarines, all advanced under-sea vessels with an air independent propulsion system. A Pakistani government official was recently quoted as saying it was vital for the navy to acquire more submarines to offset "the pressure we will definitely come under" due to the rapid expansion of India's naval capability. "Our Chinese brothers have always come to our help and we are asking them for assistance once again," he said.

Earlier this month, China formally began the construction of two state-of-the-art fast attack missile crafts for the Pakistan Navy, in addition to eight F22P (4 only) war frigates it ordered from Beijing back in 2005. Although the value of these contracts are kept a tight secret, some want to know how Pakistan can commit such enormous resources to defense spending.

“While President Asif Zardari travels to China every six months and signs one memorandum of understanding after another, he has committed way too much than he can deliver. There are too many kickbacks for contracts,”(no proof against the chinese - french yes) said Maria Sultan, the director general for the South Asia Strategic Stability Institute in Islamabad. “You have to look at the long-term viability of these loans and look at what Pakistan can pay in 5, 10, 15 years. A lot of loans are forgiven with China not asking for Pakistan to return the capital after paying interest,” said Sultan.

But there may be issues in the Pakistani-China relationship.

“Pakistan and China have problems understanding each other’s mindset,” said Sultan. “Pakistan had difficulty in applying to the Chinese the hardcore approach to business that it had experienced the United States at the start. That’s not the approach with the Chinese, which is a personal approach built over time through friendships and gradual trust building. China delivers in 15 years what the U.S. can in four years.”(aint that a joke - its the other way around)

That locks Pakistan into a deeper relationship with China, arguably an additional downside when diversity of suppliers is a standard policy in many countries to ensure accessibility to weaponry.

“It creates a dependency, especially when you start to talk about sophisticated modern […] technology. You create dependency in terms of upgrades, in terms of spare parts and ammunition, contractor relationships and training,” said Hughes.

. .
After putting Pakistan time and again under sanctions that could jeopardize our National security US shouldn't expect Pakistan to be 100% reliant on it.

. .
With any deal with the U.S. there are always strings attached that costs Pakistani lives, with China its never like that.

Pakistan had the exact same approach towards USA in 60's and 70's ...free military hardware.. soft loans ... military aid... Look what eventually happened... your most trusted ally is infringing on you soveriegnity by bombing you ... is carrying out covert actions against your own old strategic allies... in addition is offering every kind of military hardware from aircrafts to missiles to your arch enemy India .....

China will become a superpower... just pray that they treat you better than the american when they become a global giant

Lol, one of the many consistent propaganda campaigns that are misleading & exaggerated but fit the bill for the an audience that want sensational “revelation” and a villain in the America’s war on terror in the south east Asia. . The “finger print” of these articles is very familiar although the date and the name of the “ANAL”yst might be different but you can see the same style from these so called writers in the past who were predicting the demise of Pakistan from 6 months to 6 weeks since the American Invasion of Afghanistan about 10 years ago. The intensity of their predictions escalated during TTP occupation of Bunair and the GHQ attack but chose not to mention the Pakistan Army’s successful operations contrast it with Lacklustre NATO performance where every operation was termed as the final nail in Taliban’s coffin & breaking the backbone of Taliban only to see Taliban bouncing back.

The usual structure of these articles is Portraying Pakistan as an untrustworthy ally, showing USA as a benevolent & forgiving deity. Add in the shadowy ISI & Pak Army as the real culprits then mourn over their close ties with the new evil Chinese (who replaced USSR as the main antagonists). Mourn over Pakistan’s nuclear capability, condemn its support for Afghan Mujahideen (conveniently omitting role of CIA & Saudis in this whole episode).

.
Bull$hit article with info picked up from the internet. Nothing new here. Somehow implies Pakistan was allied with US and was now allied with China against the US. Pakistan has had militarily relationships with China for the last 45 years. They have been our biggest military supplier for many decades. If American media just woke up to the fact they have been living with their head in their A$$es.

.
American media is spreading misinformation among its people.

American media never reports that Pakistan has been the bigbest donor to US in the form of transit aid to US and NATO valued to be trillions of dollars annually.

. .
Unlike the US.. which even in the hey days of "friendship" in the late 50's and early 60's had restrictions in place on hardware.. and funds... The chinese have given none.

Koi gal ni yara, 'For she knows not what she says, please forgive the child'

Some standard of journalism, even a fifth grader writes better articles for the school diary..

^^ It is the way USA works, even there is/will be restrictions on their biggest allies, i.e U.K & Isr ael and even France.

U.K was smart enough to make own weapons instead of going F-15,F-16 ways. But now they have no choice but to go to F-35 even with EF in hand.

France is more smart, yet to decide on 5th Gen..

Reading the article it feels that the Author has a classic case of Amnesia , they related Pakistan's current alliance with China as a sudden act perpetuated
by sudden acts of some rouge elements in past 10 years

USA's "UN-DEPENDABILITY" goes a long way

-1950-
>Some allege that CIA knocked out Liqat Ali Khan, which paved the way for US negotiators to deal with power hungry officials which led to initial funding of army with weapons. I believe he was , so that people who could be bought were brought in power !!!! May be he was not a man who could be bought with Dollars

You do the math , after that incident our democracy got derailed

> Post 1965 , there was a arms embargo on Pakistan which resulted in severe problems for our Armed forces in between the time 1965 and 1970's , I think US alleged that Pakistan used its fighters in offensive positions in 1965 so as punishment our air force was denied upgrade and equipment. India on other hand was armed with latest weapons post 1965 by USSR.

> In 1970's when Indian conspiracy was at a height - US did not intervene to protect the breakup of Pakistan which was nothing short of backstabbing no different then what we see in many of the so called "allies of USA" But us was already caught up in Viet Nam war

> When India went nuclear in 1974 - US was no where to be found it hid in its cave. Instead Pakistani politicians were told they will be severely punished if they decided to go nuclear - this eventually lead to a popular leader Bhutto being assassinated by Zia Ul Haq (Dictator). So Pakistani Nation was back-stabbed again by USA who fully supported General Zia they rewarded him with $$

> In 1980's - to fight its own war with USSR, Regan decided its good idea to give weapons again to Pakistan , because they will fight a proxy
war against USSR, again what kind of a friend pushes you at brink of war we were pawns in their hands vs USSR. Mean while funding was
provided via CIA for Mujaheddin - and it radicalized our seemingly simple nation. As a support to Dictator Zia Ul Haq , he was given F16 fighters
Just like USA provides weapons to other states which might serve US cause

> In 90' - of course we were hit with Sanctions under Nawaz Sharif's term why we becasue we went nuclear after India and our paid for 70 F16
fighter planes were never delivered , some what same as how other Muslim nations order something and they never get it.

> US on the other gave us wheat and soya beans this was the reward for our friendship by USA.

> 2000's our JF17 Thunder program was launched after we got SICK OF US mentality i.e since 1965 we were treated as nothing

> USA came after our nuclear scientist post 9/11 to try to punish our brilliant scientist for their work just like they killed of Bhutto in 70's

> Post 2000 Pakistan naturally started to get cosy with China with whome we have brotherly ties becasue CHINA is a dependable Friend , an ally
a real FRIEND -

a) We had a successful project JF17 Thunder with china
b) We had successful project Al Khalid Tanks with China
c) We had successful project F22P frigates with China
d) We had trade and economy project with China
e) We have MOU on submarines with China
f) We have missiles technology with cooperation with our friends
g)We have Missile boats being made with China
h) China helped build gawadar port

plus we are getting J10B with China ....

What exactly USA done for Pakistan ?? in last 40 years ?? Drone attacks to name a few and some kits for F16
which is already outdated plane

Did we get TOT for F15 Silent Eagle? No
Did we get TOT for US friagtes ? No
DId we get Abraham Tanks ? No
Did we get Transport planes and Helicopters ? No

CHINA IS THE HIGHT OF K-2 Mountain peak , while US is just not dependable ally Period

Please don't even compare a GREAT NATION LIKE CHINA to the United states of Lies cheat , backstabbing , double faced, Use you when we can America

Plus world has seen how US supports dictators , like Husani Mubarak - Zia Ul Haq - Saddam - Royal Families

How does US treats our nationals ?? yep strip searches etc you guessed it I mean US is not dependable

The most recent case if CIA agent killing civilians and then , running off thru back door was perhaps the last nail in coffin

The media in US will not report the whole picture becasue they will only report the story from 1 dimension - and that dimension is the one defined by CIA/US Military and Gov

They will not show once we were very close allies but due to US's own failed foreign policies we are in no man's land.

With China we know we have a friend , who cares for our nation and treats us on a equal mutual respect and that is something that USA will never understand
