Pakistan doubts viability of oil pipeline project from Russia to India

December 01, 20:24 UTC+3

The project of a Russia-India trans-Asian pipeline with an investment programme of about $30 billion has been discussed by market players and experts since 2005

MOSCOW, December 1. /TASS/. Pakistan doubts viability of the project of oil pipeline construction from Russia to India, Pakistan’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Mohammad Ishaq Dar told TASS on Monday.

“India has invited Russia to such a project. Everything is possible in this world. But in this particular case, it is important to choose the right geography of a pipeline and ensure its security. War in Afghanistan goes on and it augments the risks. So, it is worth analyzing and discussing this invitation to make sure it is viable,” he said, adding that if the parties to the project were ready, “there will be no problems with Pakistan.”

Earlier, India initiated the formation of a working group to look at possible ground transportation of oil and gas from Russia. Ground transportation of hydrocarbons from Russia to India is possible only via the territories of transit countries: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Long-term factors of risk are instability of the political situation in Afghanistan and complicated inter-state relations between India and Pakistan.

The project of a Russia-India trans-Asian pipeline with an investment programme of about $30 billion has been discussed by market players and experts since 2005. Plans to set up a Russia-India working group on analyzing possibilities of ground transportation of oil and gas were announced in a joint statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh published in the autumn of 2013 after top-level talks.

India is geographically locked off from Central Asia and Russia by Pakistan.

The only feasible pipeline route from Russia or Central Asia to India, is through western China.

Since we already have numerous pipelines to Central Asia, and are building many more to Russia.

.
Pipe line from Iran is only possible (still doubtful) option.

.
Pipe line from Iran is feasible from sea route and both countries should think about it seriously.

It's not worthwhile with undersea pipelines when land options are available.

Sea pipeline to Iran?
That would be crazy expensive to build.
You seem to be unaware that Iran, India and Oman have begun official negotiations for delivery of Iranian natural gas to the Indian market through a deep-water pipeline.

India’s South Asia Gas Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. (SAGE) has conducted feasibility studies for the planned 1,400-kilometer pipeline, which is estimated to cost USD 4-5 billion and would carry 31 million cubic meters (mcm) per day of gas to India.

The envisioned pipeline will carry gas from Iran’s gigantic South Pars gas field.

India is among Asia’s major importers of energy and resorted on Iran to meet a portion of its energy demands.

Here's how it will be constructed...

Since it skirts Pakistan by a long way, there would be no disruptions in supply due to terror activities.

Just as @Chinese-Dragon stated, it's too expensive. Not worthwhile.

Sorry we are already in negotiations with Iran for India-Iran sea pipeline.Project would be around 5 billion$.
On topic:We should extend the pipeline through China if it possible. But dont over dependent on it.We should diversify our sources.

Pipelines are supposed to be a very economical way to get oil and gas.

Building it under the sea is going to put the costs through the roof, and that means the gas is more expensive.

But who will guarantee its safety when it will pass from troubled region??

Of Course it would be expensive. But GoI is already initiated the talks with Iran and Oman and one of our company already did necessary feasibility and requirement study. That means Govt of India dont have any problem with it.
If GoI dont have any problem with expense. What is your problem with that think tank?
