* UK PM acknowledges Pakistan’s sacrifices in war against terror

LONDON: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Tuesday asked the United Kingdom to provide latest military hardware to Pakistan.

Raja met his British counterpart David Cameron on Tuesday at the latter’s official residence, 10 Downing Street. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed matters of bilateral interest, including the aftermath in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of NATO troops. Prime Minister Raja asked his British counterpart to give military hardware to Pakistan. He appreciated Britain’s role in helping Pakistan promote education and healthcare. British Prime Minister Cameron said Pakistan had made huge sacrifices in the war against terror and his country would continue to stand by Pakistan to carry on the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue.

Prime Minister Raja appreciated Britain’s role in helping Pakistan promote education and healthcare and also for helping the country access European markets. Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was also present in the meeting. While describing his talks with Prime Minister Cameron which lasted beyond scheduled time, Prime Minister Raja said, “It went very well.” The meeting covered bilateral relations, transition in Afghanistan and Indo-Pakistan relations apart from discussions on matters of national and international importance. The British premier was assisted by special representative of the UK to Afghanistan Simon Gass, High Commissioner of UK in Pakistan Adam Thomson and senior aides.

Prime Minister Raja was assisted during the talks by Foreign Minister Khar, Paksitna’s High Commissioner in UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan, besides Tariq Kiani, Brig (r) Hamid Hasan. Thanking the British prime minister for his keen interest and proactive role on the issue of Afghanistan, Prime Minister Raja reiterated that Pakistan desires a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. Pakistan, he said, is working closely with the Afghan High Peace Council so that all stakeholders are on board and the steps taken are beneficial and reinforcing.

The prime minister stressed the need to build up the Afghan security forces during the transition period so that they can take up responsibilities. During the talks, the British premier reiterated that “your friends are our friends, and your enemies are our enemies”. Prime Minister Raja thanked the British premier for his country’s support on the issue of securing GSP plus status for Pakistan from the EU countries.

He also appreciated the assistance being extended by the United Kingdom in the development of health and education sectors in Pakistan. Expressing satisfaction over bilateral relations between the two countries, both the leaders expressed confidence that they looked forward to far greater cooperation during transition in Afghanistan. Raja apprised his British counterpart of the investment opportunities in Pakistan and the economic reforms and policies initiated by his government to facilitate investors by providing a conducive environment.

Commenting on improving ties between India and Pakistan, the British prime minister observed that “there was need to open market to harvest economic bonuses”. Raja Pervez Ashraf said that Britain has proved it to be a friend of democratic Pakistan. Meanwhile, Cameron, while hailing the recently concluded trilateral meeting, said that Pakistan’s role was constructive and he would be visiting Pakistan this summer to carry the process forward. Earlier, Prime Minister Raja was welcomed by the British premier, who came out from his official residence to receive him. agencies

With MMRCA rejection and other deals going to US/ Russia /France, UK would wan't to point a score against India. I believe this is Pak's golden chance to acquire western tech as USA/ France/ Israel are non starters on this front. But the thing is, unlike our ministry of external affairs, Pakistani diplomats are not really known to play the diplomatic role that effectively. Also, lack of funds could be an issue for Pak purchasing western weapons.

Camerron is a stuck up bigot.
Dont think he will approve any military assistance to Pakistan.
He doesnt like Europeans..how can he like Pakistanis..he doesnt.

UK needs money. Look at their condition. Would they want their defence industries to close down ? Its a good idea to make them think.

more like a plea rather than "demand"

well..........EFT for PAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pakistan needs even more money. PKR has gone to its lowest. Pakistan has to pay $ 350 million to IMF by Feb 26. I think Pakistan should rather buy Chinese weapons on soft loans.

But I would like to know what type of military hardware and weapons Pakistan is interested in.

In the whole article, word DEMAND was not used even once, albeit in the heading.

Question is What Kind of Military Hardware Pakistan is interested in ?

LONDON: Pakistan has asked Britain
to consider giving Pakistan the
military equipment in Afghanistan
which will be left behind when the UK
troops quit the country before the end
of 2014, it has been learnt.
The News can exclusively disclose that the
issue of military hardware was raised
during talks between Prime Minister Raja
Pervaiz Ashraf and British Prime Minister
David Cameron on Tuesday.
Sources have told this scribe that Pakistan
has told Britain that it needs the military
hardware such as night goggles, tanks and
armoured vehicles to fight the ‘war on
terror’ effectively and to deal with the
militants in the aftermath of departure of
Western troops from the war-torn
Afghanistan. Britain has struck a deal with
Uzbekistan to sell its weapons in
exchange for safe passage for thousands
of vehicles and containers as British
troops prepare to withdraw and complete
the whole process by the end of 2014.
Although, some of the equipment will be
transported through Pakistan on way back
to Britain but this contains material which
is not of much significance from the
military point of view. Pakistan has
questioned why Britain felt the need to
adopt a highly expensive route through
Uzbekistan, rather than the cheap option
of Pakistan as the costs and logistics
through Pakistan would have cost only a
fraction of what it would cost through any
other country.
When the two premiers met for 45
minutes on Tuesday afternoon at the
Number 10 Downing Street, PM Ashraf
told Prime Minister Cameron about
Pakistan’s position on this and asked
Britain to seriously consider selling high-
tech hardware to Pakistan as it would
increase Pakistan’s capacity to fight the
war against terror.
Pakistan faces new risks after the
withdrawal of Nato troops from
Afghanistan but it also feels that some
Western countries are playing a double
game with it and playing only lip service
to its being a partner in the war against
terrorism.
Prime Minister Ashraf said his talks with
British PM went “very well”. The British
PM was assisted in his talks by
representative of the UK to Afghanistan
Simon Gass, Adam Thompson while Hina
Rabbani Khar, Brigadier Hamid Ahsan and
Wajid Shamusl Hasan assisted PM Ashraf.
He told PM Cameron that Pakistan
desired a peaceful and stable Afghanistan
and all stakeholders were on board to find
a solution to the Afghanistan issue.
Prime Minister Cameron told the
Pakistani delegation: “Your friends are our
friends and your enemies are our
enemies.” PM Ashraf thanked Britain for
support on the issue of granting GSP Plus
status to Pakistan.
Speaking on Monday night at a community
dinner, the PM said that he was a victim
of “negative propaganda” and he no more
thinks it is of any meaning to defend
allegations against him.
“I have left it to Allah. I was criticised
when I was a federal minister. My
enemies were aghast when I was made
the premier. They will not understand
that it’s through Allah’s will that I am
where I am today and I don’t want to
make them understand,” he told a
community dinner in London where 300
guests were invited.
He said that the Pakistan People’s Party
(PPP) government had successfully dealt
with national issues and situation in the
country was far better than 2008 when it
took over from the military dictatorship.
He said the whole world has seen
“economic meltdown” and crime and
corruption was not only limited to
Pakistan.
“We have suffered because of our
frontline status in the war against
terrorism but we have followed that
‘democracy is the best revenge’ doctrine.
We will have elections on time. We have
done everything to make sure that the
credibility of these elections is not
doubted. We brought every stakeholder
together and devised an electoral
system; Fakhruddin G Ibrahim has
everyone’s trust. We will win these
elections on the basis of our
performance,” said the prime minister,
inviting the overseas Pakistanis to come
to Pakistan.
He blamed “some of our allies” and
Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) for
making the issue of overseas’
parliamentary representation a “political
stunt”. He promised that his party will
bring the bill again before parliament. “If
you give us remittances and can vote in
Pakistani elections, then you should be
able to stand in election too,” he said. He
said today there were many claimants in a
democratic set-up but there were none
around when the PPP was rendering
sacrifices alone.

I understand the point that it is a good time to negotiate with UK , Italy , Germany for Pakistan but the thing is :D WHERE'S THE MONEY MATE
