If we look into the past. Nations such as United States, Ottomon Empire, Russia, Britain were largely insignificant powers in the international community. Their rise largely being through economic, military, and political means.
Where the defence industries of these nations played a vital role. The extent of sophistication of a nations's defence industry determines to a great extent how the country is able to project itself globally.
Now, with crumbling of traditional ways in which countries used to project their power and form a clout. And rise of a multi-polar dynamic world. Pakistan is at a cross roads. Where there is a feeling of wariness of being bogged down and a desire for progress in its citizens. Furthermore, the mass injections of Chinese investment through the OBOR initiative Pakistan has a golden oppurtunity, if leveraged effectively by its people and leadership could yield enormous dividends for the nation as a whole. Where, if instead of simply transitioning from US influence to Chinese influence, Pakistan's people can make use of their vast, readily available, affordable labor pool and harness local talent; will in fact give Pakistan a shot at becoming a major rising power. This does require dedication, a mass overhaul of institutions and psychology of populace, to instill entrepreneurship, leadership and a work ethic in the population.
Just like the nations discussed earlier Pakistan's defence industrial set up also has a very central to the rising dynamics of global and regional changes. If like CPEC Pakistan can utilize its local talent and labor effectively to come up with weapons systems that are of top quality and yet easy on the wallet. Defence solutions that are product of an out of the box thought process could become a major driving factor for Pakistan to be able to make massive economic gains. Moreover, offering easily accessible yet sophisticated defence platforms would even allow Pakistan more political leverage as well. If Pakistan can offer the world something that is uniques, unavailable and also affordable their will be a lot of demand for such goods. Whether, in the defence market or in other markets.
The most important regions would be the under dog nations(as I like to call them). Nations who are wary of excessive US chenanigans. Who are also slowly climbing the ladder of progress and shedding US influence. Namely: South Americas, Africa, Central Asian & Balkan nations, Pakistan's own backyard(Iran,Afghanistan), small countries in ME like Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and to some extent Asian countires as well.
Other nations also recognize a growing demand for military systems. Hence, we see a country like Turkey investing greatly in trying to expedite the process of it's military industry becoming self sufficient and eventually a major weapons exporter.
I think Pakistan is also realizing this and beginning to look into it's own sphere of influence.
So, Pakistan has great emerging oppurtunities, one of those oppurtunities is in the form of emerging military needs. The major question is will Pakistan be able to leverage it's indigenous talent pool and labor to become a major player in the defence market. The Pakistan armed forces seem to be committed to pursuing this avenue. But an even important question is will palyers from the Public domain be able to step up and offer unique, sophisticated and affordable defence solutions to the international market???
