BARA: In a major development, the federal government on Friday announced disconnection of supply lines to the allied forces stationed in Afghanistan through Pakistan in an apparent reaction to a ground attack on a border village in South Waziristan agency by the Nato forces.

Political authorities of the Khyber Agency claimed to have received verbal directives to immediately halt transportation of all kinds of goods meant for the US-led Nato forces in Afghanistan for an indefinite period.

Authorities claimed the decision was taken in the wake of the growing unrest in the Khyber Agency that provides for the only ground link of the country to the war-torn Afghanistan. "Until now, drivers of the vehicles carrying goods meant for the foreign forces in Afghanistan were directed to reach the tribal agency between 7am to 10am, which were then escorted to the border town of Torkhum by the Khassadar force," the authorities told The News.

The authorities claimed that due to repeated attacks on the personnel of the Khassadar forces during the last one week and abduction of a few personnel, it had become difficult for the security forces to provide foolproof security to the supply lines.

Independent sources, however, claimed that the government feared retaliation by the tribesmen against a recent ground attack conducted by the Nato forces in Angoor Adda of the South Waziristan Agency that triggered condemnation from various quarters, including the government of Pakistan itself.

NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani had likened the attack to an aggression against a sovereign state, saying the people of the country expected the Pakistan Army to give a befitting reply to the attack. He said that some twenty innocent people lost their lives — most of them were women and children.

The US government had accepted responsibility for the attack but did not offer any apology for the same and instead announced to launch more such attacks against the militants across the border, if so required in future.

Fuel Supply Route To Western Forces Resumed

September 6, 2008

PESHAWAR: Pakistan resumed a major fuel supply route for Western forces in Afghanistan on Saturday after blocking it late on Friday. The fuel was blocked in response to a raid by US forces into northwest Pakistan this week.

US commandos attacked suspected militants inside Pakistani territory on Wednesday, killing 20 people including women and children.

The Torkham highway, linking Peshawar with Kabul and northern parts of Afghanistan and Central Asian states, is a major supply route for the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in the war-ravaged country.

Over 20 heavily-loaded vehicles, including oil tankers, were stranded at the border town of Torkham which were later allowed to go.

Stand firm and it will pay off. If Pakistan stops operations in the North, the US might be pressured to either :

A). Drastically step up cross border raids, losing Pakistan as an ally and complicating matters very close to Iran

B). Drop all adventurism into Pakistan proper due to pressure from Pakistan and internationally.

If Pakistan plays its cards right on the international scene with the new civilian government the US will look like a fool for saying it will conduct more raids on civilians.

In either case, this is a good sign to show consequences for ill-conceived actions.

This was surely a good pressure tactic and we should have played our card this time. US is never going to take our concerns seriously. We had our foot on the tail of barking dog but our policy makers are such a** holes, they think from their ***** instead of brains.

Why this pressure was not used by CIA backed 'Khalipha" General Pervez Musharrraff.......worst killer and 'women seller' of history.

Was he busy selling girls like Dr. Afia to Americans?

Losers!

. .
But this also indicates that we still have this card left to play. Why are we not playing this card? What is holding us back?

Respected members, comments please.:coffee:

Well i think there was no intention at the first place from our side to hold NATO supplies, thanks to our pathetic media, it was wrongly displayed in that manner. In reality its nothing like that and as we have clearly seen supplies were soon resumed. If it had been the other way round we would have not seen the resuming of the supply routes.

As for whats holding us back, GOP. They certainly like dollars flowing in.

Please don't go off topic. General Pervez is gone now. It can be discussed on some other thread as well.

Sir, but as it seems this route is very critical for NATO supplies. Why can't we get some middle way of officially threatening of blocking of supplies and show our powerful intentions to do so? Don't you think it can be used as a pressure tactic to stop attacks by US and getting some more dollars "in"?

Like i mentioned before, the question is not about whether we can or whether we cannot, its about GOP. And GOP does not find any reason doing so since they are having their pockets full, for them to hell with everything rest which includes Pakistan as well. As for more dollars, things dont work that way, we have already a mechanism placed in which they use our bases for logistics and inreturn pay us. Bottom line is that if this card has to be played it has to be played to stop NATO strikes within Pakistan and not just for more dollars. Infact americans will be more then happy to pay us a bit more inreturn of a bit more strikes within Pakistan. Everything starts and ends with GOP stance. SInce Mr10% opps i mean Mr president clearly said right after the attack that our cooperation will continue, rest is not that hard to imagine.

10% should have been dealt with a long time ago, I can't believe I'm seeing his face in charge of my country and it's resources again.

ISLAMABAD (September 07 2008): Minister for Defence, Ahmed Mukhtiar on Saturday has said Pakistan will continue uninterrupted co-operation with Nato, adding the logistic supply to Nato was temporarily suspended due to reports of miscreants' cross border movement.

"The logistic supply to Nato was suspended as there were reports that some miscreants were going the other side while hiding in the convey. The supply was restored soon after clearness of the convey by the security forces." Talking to media persons at Parliament House he said, the government of Pakistan had already registered protest with the US for the attack by Nato forces inside Pakistan.

To a question he said the US should care about sovereignty of Pakistan, "We are fighting against terrorism and Pakistan has paid maximum price in this fight." The government has set up number of check posts at Pak-Afghan border to stop cross-border movement, however, he said, it is very difficult to cover the whole border. On the other hand, he said, the Afghan government has set up only 200 check posts at the border.
