Pakistan chief Raheel Sharif meets Afghan defence minister, suggests training for officers.

The Pakistani army chief of staff Gen. Raheel Sharif met with the acting Afghan defense minister Bismillah Mohammadi during his visit to Kabul on Thursday.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the Pakistani army chief of staff Gen. Sahrif proposed training for the young Afghan army officers in Pakistan.

A statement released by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Gen. Sharif reaffirmed that Pakistan is prepared to assit Afghanistan in military, economic and political affairs.

The statement further added that two sides also discussed issues of bilateral interest, including joint fight against terrorism in the region.

Gen. Sharif also vowed to assist Afghanistan in maintaining security along the Durand Line and insisted that maintaining better security across the Durand Line was in the interest of both Pakistan, Afghanistan and the region.

In the meantime, acting defense minister Bismillah Mohammadi said the Afghan government is hopeful that the procedure to jointly fight terrorism will be finalized by Kabul and Islamabad within the next one week which will help the Afghan and Pakistani forces to jointly fight the terrorism.

Mohammadi said the procedure once finalized will help the two neighbors to furhther expand cooperation in fight against the terrorism.

Gen. Sharif is the second senior Pakistani official visiting Afghanistan following the formation of the new Afghan unity government.

Earlier Pakistan’s national security adviser Sartaj Aziz visited Kabul to meet with the new Afghan leadership in a bid to improve ties between the two nations.

The visit by Gen. Sharif to Kabul comes as the US Department of Defense accused Pakistan in its latest report for using militant groups as ‘proxy forces’ to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.
