Washington, Jan 24 (PTI) In a strong message, US President Barack Obama told Pakistan today that it "can and must" take more effective action against terrorist groups operating from its soil by "delegitimising, disrupting and dismantling" terror networks there.
Describing the terror attack on the IAF base in Pathankot as "another example of the inexcusable terrorism that India has endured for too long", Obama gave credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reaching out to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif after the attack.
"Both leaders are advancing a dialogue on how to confront violent extremism and terrorism across the region," Obama told PTI in an interview here during which he answered a wide range of questions covering Indo-US ties, terrorism and outcome of the Paris climate change summit.
Voicing his belief that the Indo-US relationship can be one of the defining partnerships of the century, Obama said that Modi shared his enthusiasm for a strong partnership and "we have developed a friendship and close working relationship, including our conversations on the new secure lines between our offices".
Asked if the relationship has achieved its full potential, the President replied, "Absolutely not."
On the Pathankot attack, Obama said, "We join India in condemning the attack, saluting the Indians who fought to prevent more loss of life and extending our condolences to the victims and their families.
"Tragedies like this also underscore why the US and India continue to be such close partners in fighting terrorism."
Obama was of the view that Sharif recognised that insecurity in Pakistan is a threat to its own stability and that of the region. After the December, 2014 school massacre in Peshawar he had vowed to target all militants, regardless of their agenda or affiliation.
"That is the right policy. Since then, we have seen Pakistan take action against several specific groups. We have also seen continued terrorism inside Pakistan such as the recent attack on the university in north west Pakistan."
The President said that he still believed that "Pakistan can and must" take more effective action against terrorist groups that operate from its territory.
"Pakistan has an opportunity to show that it is serious about delegitimising, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks. In the region and around the world, there must be zero tolerance for safe havens and terrorists must be brought to justice," he asserted in this third interview to PTI.

Pakistan can and must do more to dismantle terrorist networks: Obama

NEW DELHI: US President Barack Obama has urged Pakistan to show it is “serious” about crushing extremist networks operating on its territory, saying the latest mass killing of students underlined the need for more decisive action.

In an interview with the Press Trust of India published on Sunday, Obama praised recent crackdowns by Pakistani security forces but said more should be done to eradicate violent groups.

“Pakistan has an opportunity to show that it is serious about delegitimising, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks,” Obama told the news agency in Washington.

“In the region and around the world, there must be zero tolerance for safe havens and terrorists must be brought to justice.”

Twenty-one people were killed last Wednesday in an attack at a university campus in Charsada which was claimed by a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, barely a year after a massacre at a school in Peshawar that killed more than 150 people.

Obama said the crackdown on extremists was “the right policy” but was quoted as saying that Pakistan “can and must” take more effective action.

“Since then (Peshawar), we have seen Pakistan take action against several specific groups,” said Obama.

“We have also seen continued terrorism inside Pakistan such as the recent attack on the university in northwest Pakistan.”

India has blamed gunmen belonging to the militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed for an attack on one of its air force bases close to the Pakistan border earlier this month that left seven soldiers dead.

Obama said that attack in Punjab was “another example of the inexcusable terrorism that India has endured for too long”.

The attack came only days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had paid his first visit to Pakistan, dropping in for talks with his counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his way home from Afghanistan.

Modi has resisted pressure to put ties with Pakistan back in deep freeze after the air base attack, and Obama endorsed the continuation of contacts.

“Both leaders are advancing a dialogue on how to confront violent extremism and terrorism across the region,” Obama said.

Same old do more rhetoric with no substance.

I guess somebody needs to show this to Obama something he conveniently choose to ignore.
India - Terrorist Groups

India has 71 major terrorist networks with hundreds of inactive ones that can get active whenever they choose to.

As far as pathankot is concerned Indian silence and lack of any investigation evidence sharing with Pakistan clearly shows that was a false flag that failed to achieve its objectives as no one internationally bought indian allegation of Pakistans involvement and world has moved on.

Rest In Peace Logic: Attacks in India are False Flag & Attacks in Pakistan are sponsored by: India (RAW), Mossad etc etc.

We didn't officially blame India and unlike your DM ours didn't start threatening that we will choose the place and time of attack etc.

Plus we shared all the info obtained after investigation with world pinpointing how it was planned and arrested accomplices with in hours and talked to Afghans as well about their land being used.

How ever Indian investigation into Pathankot are shrouded into mystery first it took them three days to neutralize 6 guys ( a tactics just to get more time in intl media) and since then silence that SP and his driver everybody is roaming freely . Indian agencies didn't arrest any accomplice or any thing at all what you want to believe us that those 6 guys did that successful audacious attack without any local help and were landed by ISI via a helicopter in Pathankot?

Good to see that USA now do not consider kashmiri jehadi as freedom fighters but as terrorists.

Too bad for Obama he can't even convince his own party and people to get things done. The Republicans and even his own party members scold Obama for every mistake inside and outside the country. One just has to look at the endless list of problems and fiascos under the watch of Obama to get an idea how ludicrous his leadership has been. From ISIS to a failed war in Iraq and Afghanistan. All under the watch of dear Obama. A total disastrous failure.

Obama is perhaps the biggest failure in the history of the US. Here he is lecturing Pakistan for the failures of his own country in the terrorist nation of Afghanistan. Afghan trained terrorists infiltrate Pakistan with the help of Indian suicide factories and resort to carnage of our innocent people. This fool tells Pakistan to do more. He expects to be taken seriously after waging illegal drone strikes and the killing of Pakistani army personnel in broad daylight. He can shove his F-16s where the sun doesn't shine.

Well, too bad for Obama that he is lost entire credibility and support of Pakistan. His words don't have any meaning in the world today. The world laughs at him and every other country does what needs to be done. From China, Russia to Iran and Pakistan. The US has created only problems with every country under the watch of Obama. Today a crazy nutter like Trump is leading the polls due to Obama's failures. Red necks are queuing up and rubbing their hands to get rid of Obama the failure. Red necks openly chant racist slogans in Republican rallies. This is how divided Obama's nation is today.

The best Obama can do is to get emotional on national TV after every gun attack in his country. This is the level of failure Obama represents. He cannot get things done and only blames others for his failures.

The last thing Obama needs to do is point a finger towards Pakistan. Fully knowing that Afghan soil is where Indian sponsored terrorists are taught to hate and kill Pakistanis. Obama has just lost more Pakistani support (if there was any left) after making such an ill statement.

No substance? False flag? I agree no one may buy Indian allegations, but they will definitely not buy what Pakistan has been saying about Indian involvement in terrorism in Pakistan. Those dossiers Pakistan has handed to UN and US, to name a few, is gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.

Pakistan only seems to target certain groups. Haqqani roams free. Hafeez Said roams free. Surprisingly, that Lal Masjid clerid Abdul Aziz is still walking around free. And given the spike of Taliban attacks in Afghanistan, I don't think Obama's statements lack substance.

Pakistan has always been source of terrorism.. simple

Saying a bharti, whose country officialy supported Mukti terrorism against Pakistan, Tamil tigers against sri lanka. Terrorism against Kashmiris. Support TTP, BLA (offcourse u will deny it but after 20 years u may see Indian official accepting that we were behind TTP, just like modi accepted that they were behind mukti terrorists).

On topic, no country alone can stop terrorism.
