Pakistan has attained the status of an Associate Member of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the Foreign Office stated in a press release.

The move makes Pakistan the first non-European country to achieve this status, which is a tribute to the dedicated scientists, technicians and engineers of Pakistan as well as its diplomats who have made this possible.

The agreement between Pakistan and CERN for Associate Membership was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 19 December 2014 in Islamabad by Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and the Director General of CERN.

The agreement took effect upon submission of the instrument of ratification today (31 July 2015) by Ambassador Zamir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan in Geneva, to DG CERN.

Associate Membership of CERN is a recognition of Pakistan s impressive credentials in the field of science and technology in general and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in particular. Pakistan has already made significant contributions to CERN s flagship experimental project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

"As an Associate Member of CERN, Pakistan looks forward to benefitting from, and contributing more intensively to, the increasingly innovative and challenging scientific initiatives undertaken at CERN. Deeper involvement in such initiatives will bring long term benefits to the people of Pakistan and contribute to our socio-economic development through the use of scientific breakthroughs and innovative technologies," the FO said.

The cooperation between Pakistan and CERN rooted back to signing of a cooperation agreement in 1994. After Pakistan sought membership in 2013, CERN sent its task force to evaluate the country`s science and technology base and industrial capabilities in early 2014.

The task force was mandated to evaluate the membership application on three fronts: existence of solid basis in elementary particle physics, sufficiently developed industries and the will of the national authority to support the basic research.

The CERN task force on all three accounts concluded that Pakistan fulfils the criteria and on September 18, 2014, CERN Council unanimously approved Pakistan`s membership application.

Even Pakistan donated millions of Dollars to CERN. Great achievement brings new technology in different sectors in Pakistan specially in Defence

.
Pakistani industry to bid for CERN contracts, thus opening up opportunities for industrial collaboration in areas of advanced technology.

.
What precisely we will get from it???? Can anyone explain logically for dumb people like me???

Potential benefits include training of scientists, engineers and students, getting commercial contracts from CERN for local industry, acquiring of old and used equipment and provision of high profile international science projects.

.
3 Main Benefits that we will get from associate membership

1) Associate Membership will allow Pakistan to participate in the governance of CERN through attending the meetings of the CERN Council.
2) it will allow Pakistani scientists to become members of the CERN staff, and to participate in CERN’s training and career-development programmes.
3) it will allow Pakistani industry to bid for CERN contracts, thus opening up opportunities for industrial collaboration in areas of advanced technology."

. . . . . . . .
yes! finally a tremendous acknowledgement in technical field.:pakistan::fans: :victory::yahoo::pakistan:
I thought India would already be a member .They are quite good in Space and IT fields i hear.

Our nukes are uranium based not thermonuclear (hydrogen bombs)

no not really your nukes are plutonium based. this is because missiles such as the nasr, abdali and other tbm's and srbm's need a powerful light warhead and the only thing that fit this criteria is plutonium based nukes. uranium nukes are heavy and sort of old technology. as nearly all countries use thermonuclear warheads and plutonium warheads. of course they may be some exceptions . but in pakistans case i would expect to find a primary nuke containing plutonium.
also note a pakistan have the capability to build thermonuclear weapons but chooses not to under moral ethics. well thats what they say any way
