Pakistan Auto Show

The Pakistan Auto Show 2016 being held from March 4-6 at the Expo Centre in Lahore has received an “overwhelming response” from the leading automobile manufacturers around the world, representing countries like Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, China, Taiwan and Malaysia, said Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) Chairman Mumshad Ali.

He claimed that more than 135 international and local companies would be exhibiting their products and technologies during this year’s event.

Mashood Ali Khan, PAAPAM’s senior vice-chairman, said 40 international large-scale buyers representing prestigious companies have expressed their interest in attending the auto show.

LAHORE: Improving macroeconomic indicators and a phenomenal increase in auto sales have convinced local part makers that this might be the right time to invest and expand their businesses.

For long, Pakistan has suffered from economic stagnation, but increased auto financing and falling oil prices have spurred spending in the auto sector, leading stakeholders to ponder, much more seriously, over increasing capacity.

“We are getting orders and the pace is increasing,” said Sultan & Kamil International CEO Faisal Mahmood on the sidelines of the 12th Pakistan Auto Show 2016 being held at the Lahore International Expo Centre. Mahmood’s company makes more than 350 automotive parts and exports to all major automobile markets in the world.

He is not alone. Almost every other exhibitor was hopeful of improved business activity in both local and international markets in coming months.

Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts & Accessories Manufacturers (Paapam) Senior Vice Chairman Mashood Ali Khan said the industry is growing every year.

The size of the global aftermarket (automotive part dealers other than Original Equipment Manufacturers) is over $600 billion, and Pakistan can tap into this huge market, he said.

“Pakistan is producing parts of good quality and at economical rates,” said Khan. “What it lacks is better marketing, which is a vital skill needed to tap into the robust international market.”

Paapam is planning to arrange a three-year export coaching programme with the government of Netherlands for engineering goods manufacturers of Pakistan. They say it will bring significant change in how Pakistani exporters approach foreign buyers.

Some exhibitors were also optimistic about the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the business it is expected to generate related to the engineering sector.

“Chinese truck manufacturers are thinking of setting up manufacturing facilities here because they think CPEC will increase truck demand in the country,” a car company official said requesting not to name him or his company.

The exhibition has attracted 17 international exhibitors, most of which are from China.

Organisers say the annual event is gradually gaining credibility in European auto parts buyers, but it is taking time because business deals in automobile sector usually takes two to three years to mature.

Nope. The Japanese monopoly means that the Pakistan Auto Show is merely a showcase of the same models they have on the road and their parts.

I thought the government was in the process of attracting car manufacturers from EU. I herd VW, Audi and Renault were all very interested in getting into the pakistani market with VW and Renault even offering manufacturing in Pakistan.

VW coming in pakistan with their cars and financial muscle will almost dent 50% of Japanese car sales in Pakistan. The problem is that the Japanese know this and have exploited Pakistani politicians with bribes for decades.

There were plans by all these manufacturers and more to enter the market but they had asked for some preferential terms in order to secure their investment until they can start turning a profit for themselves. Tax holidays for machinery and dye import, five years of tax rebate and subsidized energy. They are more or less justified requests that can be entertained.
The problem arose when the Japanese companies argued for an even playing field to be maintained and declared that either they should be granted the same rebate or no-one should get these concessions, failing which, the Japanese companies would withdraw their investment, effectively leaving Pakistan with no domestic vehicle manufacturing.
As a consequence, talks with the Europeans fell through.

Then I don't think there is much of a need for such Auto shows. The government need to change some policies in order to improve the Auto sector. Sad state of affairs.

it clearly obvious the japanese are worried that they are selling and inferrer item at a price they want compared to what the EU car manufacturers can offer so are playing these tactics.

The truth is Japan car industry knows how valuable it is to have a car monopoly in Pakistan, talk of them withdrawing their investments is BS, their investments and the fact that they have such a strong customer base in the country means they will never leave.

Government should stiff up, wake up now, Toyota, Suzuki & Honda sending low quality cars to Pakistan. Japanese manufacturers are giving low quality cars at high prices to Pakistanis. I was astonished to hear that there is no airbag in many of the cars. These are so unsafe and price is way too high. Government should open market for other investors, like Nissan, Hyundai, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW & FAW Luxury cars, enough is enough. That will help the people to get better cars and also the local industry will grow and jobs will be created.
