When the world wants efficiency and results it calls on the right people. After the complete fiasco of the involvement of the Indian Navy, the unsolicited help of the Indians has been politely rebuffed.

During the visit of President Zardari to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both countries requested the help from Pakistan to quell the scrouge of piracy from the Gulf Coast. Pakistan has asked for use of air bases on the Arabia peninsula and adequate compensation for the task. Pakistan also asked for the mission to be sanctioned by the US Security Council.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 25: Pakistan on Monday offered to help the international community combat the menace of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the Red sea.

The offer to supplement United Nations’ efforts to combat piracy was made at a meeting between Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN Adbullah Hussain Haroon and Belgian Minister of Defence Pieter De Crem and heads of UN peace-keeping operations.

They were discussing issues relating to the peacekeeping troops presently being deployed by the United Nations world over under the UN Security Council mandate.

Mr Haroon offered the help of Pakistan Navy to quell piracy provided a clear mandate was given by the UN Security Council, according to a press statement issued by the Pakistan mission.

He, however, made it clear that without UN-permitted involvement of the Pakistan Air Force to fly air support missions in the region from bases in the Arabian peninsula as well as financial arrangements, provision of technology, weaponry to its troops, who would serve under their own Senior Naval Commanders, Pakistan would not consider taking a lead role in the Somalian expedition. During the 90s Pakistan provided the largest peace keeping force in the world. Even now, Pakistan has one of the largest peace keeping forces in the world. The Pakistan Navy with its Augusta class Submarines and its fleet of F-16s and Frigates is perfectly poised at the mouth of the Gulf to take actio aganist the pirates in Somalia and elsewhere.

I don't think it is worth our vital resources of submarines and F-16 to be chasing Somali pirates for a few pats on the back. Let Arabs handle those janvar, we have bigger things to worry about (perfect time to attack Pakistan would be when our eyes are shifted elsewhere).

oh i think its a good move. those pats are really needed for our military at the moment. in case of subs, the pirates will not know what hit them or wheir the threat is coming from and we wont be in a setuation wheir we are being attacked by pirates.

Pressing subs to counter Pirates it awkward....All u need is a supply ship and a few fast attack crafts. or just one surface combatant....c'mon u need not spend a $100,000 torpedo on a small fishing boat....:cheesy:

Air Force will be used if requested. But as you mentioned it probably wouldn't be needed. Pakistan Navy can alone handle it, as it already commands the CTF.

I agree, it would do us good. We will have UN mandate thus legalizing our position, secondly it would bring experience to our sailors and airmen. Thirdly, it will meanthat we will get new equipment free of charge as wellas some more influence in the gulf area. If the price is right, I think PNand PAF would very much like to have a play.
