The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has initiated the development of a new stealth fighter, referred to as the Next Generation Fighter (NGF). This announcement was made by Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, highlighting the PAF's strategic shift towards enhancing its aerial capabilities.
Initially, the PAF had focused on Project AZM, an in-house program aimed at creating an original NGF. However, it appears that this project has been deprioritized, leading the PAF to explore existing international options, particularly the Chinese J-31/FC-31 stealth fighter, which is now set to be incorporated into the PAF fleet in the near future.
The J-31, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, is designed with stealth features and is expected to significantly enhance the PAF's operational reach and strike capabilities. The first deliveries of the J-31 to Pakistan are anticipated between 2028 and 2030, pending further development and production readiness.
This move reflects a broader trend among air forces globally to modernize and adapt to evolving combat requirements
