Pakistan beat South Africa by 25 runs to level series 1-1

LAHORE: Pakistani bowlers did splendid job to get Pakistan a marvelous 25-run victory over South Africa with three balls left after star batsman Muhammad Yousuf inspired with a magnificent century. Thus, the five-match series has been leveled 1-1 as the Protease had won the first match by 45 runs.

Baazi - we were lucky - our fielding was pathetic. smith catch dropped 3 times, in total 5 catches dropped - we also had fumbleitis. no one can field cleanly. where 1 run should have been given, we gave 2.
if we continue like this we wont win any more matches in this series and in india in november.
we dont have any opening batsmen. we are always losing 2/3 wickets in the 1st 5 overs which puts tremendous pressure on the middle order.
our strength is only the bowling which is keeping us in these games.

Yasir Hameed recalled to bolster opening partnership

Pakistan are looking towards their discarded batsman Yasir Hameed to deliver in the third one-dayer against South Africa in Faisalabad tomorrow (Tuesday) after the continuous failure of their openers in recent times.

‘The News’ has learnt through well-placed sources that Pakistan have decided to replace Imran Nazir, who misfired in Lahore yet again on Saturday, with Yasir Hameed. The Peshawar-born batsman will open the innings for the hosts in Faisalabad with wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal.

The national selectors have also decided to induct rookie opening batsman Khalid Latif in the one-day squad ahead of tomorrow’s game. The Karachi-based player comes in the squad as a substitute opener.

All-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who was dropped from the squad after flopping in the opening one-day game in Lahore on October 18 has been released from the squad. Hafeez opened the innings in the first one-dayer and fell for just six. He also failed to impress much in the two-match Test series earlier this month and was dropped from the Lahore Test after failing in the opening match in Karachi.

Lack of good opening stands has become a chronic problem for Pakistan in both the Test and one-day arena in recent years. So bad is the record of Pakistani opening batsmen like vice-captain Salman Butt, Imran Nazir and Mohammad Hafeez that recently Pakistan’s prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf pointed out that the national team has not been blessed with a reliable opener since the exit of Saeed Anwar. He also said that Pakistan have learnt to live with this handicap.

However, national selectors are now trying to look beyond the existing lot of openers, who have the experience of playing international cricket for Pakistan. The decision to draft the 21-year-old Khalid Latif in the one-day squad is a sign that the selectors are now willing to try out some younger batsmen at the top of the order.

It is unlikely that Khalid will be asked to play any role in the current ODI series but the young batsman will certainly get a chance to show his worth in a five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe to be played in Pakistan later this year.

Khalid, who led Pakistan to a title-winning triumph in the 2004 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh, has a superb one-day record at the domestic level having scored 840 runs in 21 games at an average of almost 50 with two centuries under his belt at a strike rate of 80.92.

Khalid’s first-class record, however, is not as impressive as he has scored 1603 runs from 33 matches at an average of 27.63.

The Karachi-born player impressed the national selectors and Pakistan team management during a series of practice games held this summer in preparation for last month’s World Twenty20 championship in South Africa.

While Khalid may still be a few games away from making his international debut, it was only a matter of time that Yasir returned to the line-up to give some stability to Pakistan’s brittle top order.

The 29-year-old Yasir has scored 1999 runs from 53 ODI appearances at an average of 38.44 with three centuries and 12 fifties. His Test stats are not bad either, having scored 1292 runs from 20 Tests at 35.88 though he hasn’t scored a century in his last 19 Tests.

On his debut in August 2003, Yasir stamped his presence in international cricket with two Test centuries — against Bangladesh at Karachi — becoming only the second player to achieve that feat.

He will be a part of the playing line-up in tomorrow’s game instead of Imran Nazir, who has once again failed to captilise on a series of chances he has received this year. Imran, 25, scored 16 in the first ODI and followed that knock with a just two in the second one-dayer. Now it seems quite unlikely that the selectors will show any faith in him for next month’s five-match ODI series against India.

Afridi wants to return to opener`s role in ODIs

Pakistan`s flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi said he is keen to take on his old role of opening the innings in the one-day series against South Africa.
Afridi has been sent into bat lower down the order for the last few months and opened only once against Bangladesh in the Twenty20 World Cup last month, scoring 30-odd runs.

"I have told my captain and coach that I am willing to open the innings if the team wants it. But if they feel the team requirement is I bat lower down the order I have no problems with that as well," he said.

Afridi said he was keen to open again because of the problem Pakistan was facing at this position for sometime now.

"I feel comfortable batting as an opener because it gives me the freedom of playing with the field restrictions," he said.

Afridi said he was looking forward to the Indian tour and would be available for Tests and one-dayers.

The all-rounder had skipped the Tests against South Africa saying he wanted to take a break from the game to attend to some personal and family commitments.
"The break was necessary but now I am feeling good and the Indian tour would be a big challenge for me and the team." Afridi now is the senior most player in the side after the retirement of Inzamam-ul-Haq as he made his debut in 1996-97 ahead of Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar.

"Being a senior player is good and I like the responsibility. It has improved and helped me as a bowler as well," he stated.

Khalid Latif is selected over Hafeez!!!

Khalid Latif replaces Hafeez in ODI squad

Pakistan's continuing troubles with their opening combination have forced the selectors to call up Khalid Latif and release Mohammad Hafeez from the 15-man squad to face South Africa in the third ODI in Faisalabad on Tuesday.
Pakistan have tried two opening combinations in two games so far and Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal have provided starts of 18 and 1. Hafeez was dropped for the second ODI and the highest score by an opener remains Nazir's 16 in the first ODI.
The 21-year old Latif has been on the fringes of selection to the senior squad for some time now. He first came to national attention when he led the Pakistan U-19 team to victory in the 2004 World Cup in Bangladesh.
He was unlucky to miss out on selection for the ICC World Twenty20 despite impressing during the various training camps held before the tournament. But solid performances in the recent home series against Australia A have finally paid off.
Latif ended the three-match ODI series in September as the leading scorer on either side. His tally of 228 runs included one fifty and a spectacular unbeaten 142 in Lahore as Pakistan successfully chased 332 against an attack that included Jason Gillespie, James Hopes and Dan Cullen.
"We are struggling with an opening pair at the moment," Salahuddin Ahmed, the chief selector, told Cricinfo. "We are already playing Kamran as an opener to make place for an extra bowler.
"Latif is a very good, upcoming youngster and was in brilliant form against Australia A recently. He fully deserves his place in the squad. Hafeez has been released and he will go back to regain his form in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy."
It is understood that Latif will not play in Faisalabad but may get an opportunity later in the series. Still, Pakistan are likely to go in with their third different opening pair in as many matches; Nazir's continuing run of poor scores means Yasir Hameed will most likely open the innings with Akmal.
And in light of an impressive bowling performance in the second ODI, Pakistan will not risk Mohammad Asif for the third game. Asif sat out the first two matches with an elbow injury that flared up during the second Test in Lahore.

Asif out of 3rd ODI

Pakistan Fast Bowler Mohammad Asif Ruled Out Of 3rd ODI In Faisalabad On Tuesday Due To Elbow Injury
Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif has been ruled out of Tuesday's third one-day international against South Africa as he has failed to recover from an elbow injury.

Pakistan go into the third match in Faisalabad with the series levelled at 1-1.

"Asif has been advised to rest for one more match as he has not made a 100 percent recovery," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed was quoted as saying to Reuters on Monday.

Asif did not play the first two one-dayers in Lahore because of the elbow problem he picked up in the second Test earlier this month.

The selectors are keen to rest Asif for the remainder of the series as they want him to be fit for an important friendly series coming up in India next month.

Pakistan have a good bunch of backup players in domestic circuit like Khurram Manzoor,Sarfaraz Ahmed,Fawad Alam,Ahmed Shehzad but i think Pakistan should open with Afridi in Subcontinent and Salman Butt (hopefully he regain his form) will be the best choice in India tour.Bechara Yasir Hameed is the most unlucky batsman as he has performed but not given chances consistantly also Asim Kamal will be good choice in tests against India.

even today Pakistan is performing well against SA so good luck to our team.
