ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday said that terrorism has no borders and expressed the hope that India will make fool-proof arrangements for the security of Cricket World Cup.

Commenting on news reports in the Indian media about planned terrorist attacks on the World Cup venues in India launched from Pakistani soil, Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said that terrorism is a vicious phenomenon that all must collectively confront.

Pakistan, itself a victim of terrorism, takes all such reports seriously, she added.

Janjua said we have already conveyed our concerns about vituperative statements being made from within India about participation of Pakistan’s cricket team.

Pakistan looks forward to the forthcoming meeting of Secretaries Interior and Home to discuss, inter-alia, counter-terrorism, she said.

World Cup organisers make no change after attack warning

NEW DELHI: Cricket World Cup organisers said on Thursday that no changes had been made to security arrangements after the Indian government’s warning of a possible militant attack on the showpiece event.

Just before the Feb 19-April 2 tournament reached the halfway mark, the government issued an alert on Wednesday over a possible attack on the tournament being played in 13 venues across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, attracting hundreds of thousands of fans.

“We don’t comment on security issues. It’s completely under the jurisdiction of the government. They have taken steps to take care of everything,” tournament director Ratnakar Shetty told Reuters on Thursday.

A Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) official said there has been no recent beefing-up of security measures in and around the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai which is staging India’s big match with the West Indies on March 20.

“We have made comprehensive security arrangements right from the warm-up matches and there has not been any change to that. It remains the same,” the TNCA official said.

STEER CLEAR
The World Cup so far has seen no repetition of that sort but has not been without incidents either.

In India, ticket-seeking fans have been baton-charged by the police while the West Indies’ team bus was stoned in Mirpur, apparently by a handful of fans disappointed by Bangladesh’s defeat by Darren Sammy and his men.

Suraj Dandeniya, Sri Lanka’s tournament director of security, said the teams could concentrate solely on cricket in the island nation without bothering about their security.

“We have taken into account (what happened in Bangladesh) but we feel our security levels are good enough to prevent something like that from happening here in Sri Lanka,” Dandeniya told Reuters by telephone.

He, however, was not so sure if incidents like stone-pelting could be prevented.

“No matter how well you prepare, a stone can be thrown from far away, it’s difficult to prevent that. In life you can never say something can’t happen, there is always a possibility.”

World Cup players questioned said they had confidence in the security arrangements.

“The security that we’ve got here and in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has been outstanding,” the Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said in Bangalore.

“There’s always a lot of police present. We have got the right people on the ground and in place. If there are any threats, we’ll definitely be knowing about it and it will be dealt with appropriately.

“Everyone’s happy and everyone’s comfortable with the way things are going as far as security goes,” said the fast bowler, a frequent visitor to India.

International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said before the tournament in a telephone interview with Reuters that he was confident that all the necessary security arrangements were in place at that time.

“It’s in fact a non-issue,” he said.

India should be ban from organizing rest of the game and all the game should be distributed among Sri Lanka and Bangladesh... As this is not the 1st time this sort of militant threat, death threat, uncivilized behavior by the crowd has become a norm... This is the appropriate action. As soon as possible banning rest of matches will be a good move until they become civilized and withdraw all this death threats ...by the radical hindu terrorist groups.

You just have shown what is the class of Indian specially west bengal crowds those who come to watch matches at Eden Garden...

ICC should go beyond all sort of lobbying and other tactics that BCCI will try to flex while taking action against them. If pakistan can suffer ban for terrorist attack which was conducted by India then why India will not face the same fate for death and terrorist threat by its radical extremist hindu terrorist groups..

well there hasn't been many incidents where players were harassed by the terrorist groups of India

So just relax... all is safe there - if anything goes wrong. Entire south Asia will be banned from hosting events

no need to show any concerns for now

World Cup Hockey: Pak team OK with security

Pakistan security agencies on Friday gave thumbs up to the security arrangements made for the World Cup hockey tournament in New Delhi beginning on February 28.

A team from Islamabad is in New Delhi to evaluate the security scenario in the national Capital ahead of the World Cup hockey to be held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

"We are satisfied with the security arrangements for the World Cup. We have gone to the hotels also. We will report to the Hockey Federation in Pakistan about our assessment," senior Pakistani security officials Rana Mujahid and Pervez Bandara told reporters here.

Besides India and Pakistan, Hockey majors like Germany, Britain and Australia are among the 12 teams fighting for the championship.

Close to 19,000 security personnel, including 200 gun-totting commandos and 1,000 men of central paramilitary forces will be deployed for ensuring a smooth conduct of Hockey World Cup, being held in India after 18 years.

The World Cup Hockey is being considered as a "dress rehearsal" for Delhi Police ahead of the Commonwealth Games in putting in place a security apparatus and planning traffic for mega event.

Taking no chance, the city police have chalked out an elaborate security and traffic plan for the event, which will be held from February 28 to March 13 at the stadium located near India Gate.
