Pak ready to send top delegates to defuse tensions with India: PM
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is ready to send a top-level delegation to India to calm tensions emerging after the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday.
Talking to reporters at the Multan Airport, Gilani appreciated the Foreign Ministrys efforts in defusing tensions with India and added that Pakistan was not isolated. Pakistan has many friends in the world who want to help, he said.
Asked by a reporter why Pakistan did not accuse India of the Marriott hotel bombing and last months violence in Karachi, Gilani said Pakistan was a responsible state and its reaction was always cautious. We do not jump to conclusions without investigations, he said.
The prime minister said the government was questioning the arrested leaders of banned organisations, but did not name anyone. Law will take its own course, Gilani said of the outcome, adding Pakistan would make a probe into any intelligence information coming from India.
Asked to comment on the arrest of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Zarrar Shah, the prime minister declined to say anything before investigations were complete.
Gilani said terrorism was a global phenomenon, adding terrorists had no religion and did not respect international boundaries. I want to assure the people and the whole world that we will not allow Pakistans soil to be utilised by terrorists, he said.
To a question, he said Pakistanis should not be concerned about reports that India had put its airforce and navy on high alert and had deployed missiles along the Pakistani border. The armed forces were fully capable of defending the country, he said. I want to give the message to the nation that the country is in safe hands. They should not be worried, Gilani said.
Addressing a public gathering in Multan later on Wednesday, Gilani said Pakistan would co-operate with India in investigating the Mumbai terrorist attacks. He said Pakistan had always stood up against terrorism and extremism and would co-operate with the international community in the war on terror.
He appreciated politicians for setting aside their differences for Pakistans national interests and said the Pakistani media had helped defuse tensions with India. Gilani said the army, the bureaucracy and the politicians were unanimous in protecting Pakistans interests. agencies
