Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has greeted Sheikh Hasina on the Independence Day and National Day of Bangladesh.

Khan sent a message to the Bangladesh premier extending warm greetings on behalf of the government and the people of his country, according to Hasina’s office.

He wished peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.

The Pakistan prime minister also expressed eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties based on mutual respect and consensus, according to the message.

Both countries share the wish for peace and development and it can be given a strong, real base by strengthening cooperation in future, it added.

Bangladesh won independence from Pakistan on this day in 1971 when it waged a nine-month bloody war.

The Pakistan Army swooped down on the unarmed Bengalis on the night of Mar 25 that year to crush their struggle for freedom following 23 years of suppression.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, before being arrested by the Pakistani forces on that night, declared independence. He was freed after victory.

The Pakistan government has in recent years condemned Bangladesh for trying the people who had collaborated in the genocide and other crimes against humanity.

SAARC SECRETARY GENERAL’S GREETINGS

Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, the secretary general of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation or SAARC, also greeted the people and government of Bangladesh in a letter to Hasina.

Weerakoon hailed Bangladesh for playing a constructive role in SAARC’s evolution. He noted Bangladesh had hosted three SAARC Summits and many other key conferences.

The Sri Lankan diplomat also thanked Bangladesh for endorsing his nomination as the 14th secretary general of the regional grouping. He said he looked forward to visit Dhaka and meet Hasina in the near future.

This one is a good news to start a fruitful thread. Thanks to Mr Imran khan. Since he officially greeted Bangladesh so I think we also should stop pushing about formal apology from Pakistan. It's better to forget 50 years old stuff. Win win situation for both side.

After studying the 1971 War with deep and different perspectives, I find it okay for PM Khan to do that. Bengalis didn't like the West Pak Regime and there were reasons that the general public began hating it. At the same time, R&AW played it's part recruiting the Bengali leaders. It was just a loophole we left for India to fill in.

If it was an unfair independence, I'd have never wished you guys.

But Happy Independence Day (with tears of regret).

Yes Zulfiqar Bhutto, the partner in crime with Sheikh Mujeeb also kissed hands of Mujeeb, not just apologized.
At the time as a result Bangladesh said they won't proceed with war crime trials with any Jamat e Islami members or Rojakars.
But here we have Sheikh Jason's , hanging old men on their 70s , by the dozens.
It's not about apology, it's about the worth of it.

You guys truly have some problem . Who said that only jamat is razakr ? There were many razakars outside jamati Islami . Just the jamatis were violent I believe . because although we did not see their activities in 1971 , we saw their massacre from 2001 - 2006 as govt ally and from 2013 to 2015 as opposition .Arson terrorism of the time in the name of democracy was actually the works of Jamat .

Jamati leaders basically hanged not because of 1971 but also because later political reason . If 71 was the reason why AL did not do it even after winning 1996 election ?

Pakistan should never had interfere in Bangladeshi internal matter . It made Hasina Pakistan relationship worse . Now the ice is melting it's a good news .

But Happy Independence Day (with tears of regret).
Thank you . We can make our relationship better as Muslim brothers . I always ignore trouble makers of both side nowadays . Rest of Pakistani and Bangladeshis have good feelings for each others and their nations .

First he gave citizenship to a million Afghans for no reason, then he lost Kashmir and now he's celebrating surrender of 100,000 Pakistani soldiers in Bangladesh.

He might as well recognise Israel while he's at it.

We appreciate and welcome this very appropriate gesture on Prime Minister Imran Khan's part. And Bangladesh govt. (above all Sheikh Hasina) must reciprocate this warm overture.

Time to bury the hatchet and shut those up in Bangladesh and abroad who capitalize on old wounds.

Like I have said many times before - it has been fifty years since we buried our dead on both sides.

Raising rancor on hate and jealousy is childish and unproductive, it certainly won't raise the dead or undo any damage done. It is - above all, a hindrance to normalizing ties.

Calling each other "stupid" and "machhlikkhor" will not help.

Time to move on everyone. Friendship for Pakistan and Bangladesh is a logical and strategic need of the day - like IK says "based on the principles of mutual respect and understanding". Hope everyone involved realizes this.

But Happy Independence Day (with tears of regret).

Bhai leaders on both sides played stupid and the result was regrettable and less than optimal. Everyone played into the hands of R&AW, a project which they launched right after 1947.

But water under the bridge is what it is - time to look at new alliances and strategic moves.
