Pak Navy shows interest in Umkhonto (Surface-to-air Missile System)

South africa blundered into buying the Gripen. They should have bough the pakistani JF17's---built avionics and weapons for them and marketed it in the sub sahara africa.

You should be quiet, otherwise I'l roast you like others...

SA bought Gripej C/D before JF-17flew... JF-17 benefited from it as it uses SA's aerial refueling probe thst was made for C/D.

Gripen is superior in everyway...

Canard design and composite airframe, for same engine output it goes over mach 2... Latest upgrade to on board radars backend has increased processinf to the point that it can now see a SU-30 in clean configuration at 300 kilometers...

i doubt it theres no need as it would be an easy target but a sub is not an easy target

Naval version babur is planned to be fired from submarines supposedly the new s20 we r getting from china but naval baber still under developement

It is better if you share your input rather than roast someone---.

But Gripen does not do anything for So Africa---. It has no known threat---. So there was no urgency---. They got put together by the Gripen media campaign.

They bought equipment they could not afford to operate---

They could have waited for the JF17----and built a complete weapons and avionics package,

Incidently---so africa does not have the model you are talking about---it can't afford the current base model gripen that they have---.

I seconde your opinion sir mastan denel having all the hi tech munition and subsystems and jf17 being the platefarm a ein win condition for both countries south africa could get more aytention and customers because of having its munition on an in service operational aircraft

Their biggest mistake was canning the Carver, which looked like the Gripen's gritter cousin (similar configuration). Had they persisted in that fighter's development, the PAF might have backed that horse, it could've been JF-17.

Pakistan Navy Chief asks for more information on Umkhonto missile


Chief of the Pakistan Navy, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, has requested more information on the Denel Dynamics Umkhonto surface-to-air missile (SAM). He made the request while on a recent visit to Simon's Town.
During the course of the visit, from 26 May, Zakaullah and his delegation met with Flag Officer Fleet, Rear Admiral Bubele Mhlana, for a courtesy call, and visited the vessels SAS Isandlwana and SAS Manthatisi. The delegation was also given a tour of the Institute of Maritime Technology in Simon's Town.

The South African Navy said Zakaullar was given a presentation covering SA Navy structure and the strategic guidance given to the Fleet by Navy Headquarters, amongst others. The Pakistan delegation requested more information about the Ukhonto missile system, which is installed aboard the SA Navy's four Valour class frigates.

The vertically launched Umkhonto is also in service with the Finnish navy aboard its Hamina fast attack craft and Hameenmaaa class minelayers. It has also been ordered by Algeria for its Meko A200 class frigates.

The missile was originally developed with a 12 km range but this was increased to 15 km and Denel has demonstrated it can reach out to 20 km, with a ceiling of 8 000 metres. Denel Dynamics is currently working on a longer range version as part of an integrated air defence system as well as a radar guided version.

Once deployed, the missile has a reaction time of 2.5 seconds and half-second intervals between missile launches. Umkhonto uses inertial navigation and mid-course guidance from the launch ship or from a land based radar and then switches to its dual-band thermal imaging seekers.

Although it is primarily an anti-missile and anti-aircraft system, its 23 kg pre-fragmented warhead makes it effective against surface targets like ships as well.

During the Pakistan Navy visit, Zakaullar asked SA Navy Chief Vice Admiral Mosiwa Hlongwane to consider the possibility of deploying vessels to Pakistan to participate in the multinational exercise AMAN-17 which will take place in February 2017. However, as this coincides with South Africa's Armed Forces Day this may not be possible.

For those that are saying that this is a useless or outdated missile, i'd like to hear why u think that...and if they realize there are multiple variant ranging from 20km to 60km with Umkhonto-R. From IR guided to Radar guided. It is amongst the more flexible and modern short to medium range naval SAMs out there. Many of u dont seem to realize that just as the ASRAAM and CAMM/Sea Ceptor are linked projects, Umkhontos further/newer developments have links to the A darter project. Pretty much the only major question about thos missile is can it be quad packed (dimensions wise it is similar to CAMM so i dont see why it couldnt if a variant was designed with that in mind) and which version the PN is interested in. Ideally the umkhonto er-ir (30km) or Umkhonto-R (reportedly 60km)

The umkhonto would be a perfectly reasonable SAM for the PN but ideally the frigate would have 32 of these minimum. I would still prefer the quad packability of CAMM which would give each PN Ada corvette 64 medium range SAM. Replace the RAM launcher with Fl3000n and ur in business

Right now, it is the Umkhonto EIR (25-35km range) that is in Denel's development pipeline and is on track to fruition. If Pakistan were to sign onto the Umkhonto, it should not be too long before it can get the EIR (and give it baseline CAMM-like capability over sea).

The Umkhonto R (60km) seems to be linked with the Marlin BVRAAM program and Denel's attempts at a dual motor rocket motor and active radar guidance seeker. The two programs seem to be at the technology demonstrator stage right now, but moving the development pace up will require an overseas partner to help foot the bill. If that program comes to fruition and sees continued development, then we could see a Barak-8-like MR/LR SAM solution.

Pakistan navy had acquired 64 RIM-67A SM-1 standard missiles and 4 launchers in 1989 with 42km range, Umkhonto missiles will most probably replace these as RIM-67A is 1970's technology.

Hi,

That is where the utility of a heavy strike aircraft comes enforce---. When you are loaded up with 2 CM400AKG flying at around 250--300 mile boundary and you can still launch them another 200 + miles----.

That would be enough to keep the opponent at a distance.
Yes it comes,But it is same (equivalent )type of utility which enemy also have.So having same thing can balance the weight,but Brahmos system is giving them edge. even china express concerns over deployment of Brahmos with its border.

It is not same type of utility---. It will have a multiplier effect of a 100 times or more---because the now the deep flank would be vulnerable---which never was .
