PAF validates concept of fighter operations from motorways

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Friday successfully validated its concept of fighter operations from the motorways and highways when its two fighter aircraft landed at a point on motorway. The historic landmark was achieved as part of the ongoing High Mark-2010 exercise. After landing, these aircraft were refuelled, rearmed and re-launched for air operation.

I think the pilots can definitly land , but the issue is that roads have to be in top condition , can't have holes and cracks becasue a high speed vehicle/plane can sweve badly if the tires go into a big hole or bump in road ...

The only requirement for high speed vehicle landing is that the surface be smooth as possible


But I have to applaud the skill and dare devil bravery of the pilots to land on civilian roads as these are not mean to take landing of aircrafts

a) Removal of the electrical wires
b) No holes
c) No speed bumps on the 200-300 meter stretch
d) Obviously no traffic lights lol
e) No obstruction
f) No bikers doing wheelies when the Mirages come landing on runway

This is not motorway, where PAF will operate. This is scene of national highway which is not protected by barbed wire.

Do not mis-quote about motorways of Pakistan plz.

The concept is to use MOTORWAYS for this purpose. Have you ever been to Motorways? The things you mentioned are not part of Motorways but a busy street in Lahore.

I remember the time we were launching Motorway 1, M1 between Islamabad and Lahore, it was discussed at that time that this will be a great strategics assert for the Army, particularly PAF who would have thousands of miles long runways spreading across the country that can effectively be used during the war. It was back in 1997-1998 what that Ideas was presented and we are exercising this after 12-13 years.

Motorway is barred on both sides and is not the only line of communication between the cities. We can use that for militry purpose at the time of need and without affecting civil trafficker between the cities which can continue using GT Road.

PAF should have 10-20 motorway airports and we need to build necessary infrastructure at every 30-40 miles along the motorway that could convert the road into a runway on a very short notice.

i don't think this is the first time we are using motorway for these kind of exercises... as far as i remember couple of years back we did the same exercises on motorway...... dun remember the year exactly....

Take a look at pakistan motorway design and layout, there are many many places along Pakistan whereby fighters can land and take off for temporary measure, mainly due to the fact that the tarmac is not for such usage, nonetheless, the Motorway designs and specific places has given Pakistan that need to use Motorways when War breaks out.

Quite clearly, any tactical plan in modern conventional warfare will involve the taking out of enemy runways and airbases as much as possible. This is where Pakistan's secondary plans come into existence.

Pakistan Air Force validates Fighter Operations from Motorway

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Air Force (PAF) successfully validated its concept of fighter operations from motorways and highways when its two fighter aircraft landed on a motorway.

The historic landmark was achieved as part of the ongoing High Mark-2010 exercise.

After landing, the aircraft were refuelled, rearmed and re-launched, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

While the point where the two aircraft touched down was not specified, it was believed to be somewhere on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway or that linking the capital with Peshawar.

High Mark-2010, launched March 15, is the PAF’s biggest war game in five years and covers the the entire country from Skardu in the north till the Arabian Sea in the south.

According to a PAF spokesman, “the ever changing geo-political environment in the region demands change in the employment concepts and doctrinal changes in the application of air power with emphasis on joint operations”.

“High Mark-2010 would provide the PAF an opportunity to validate these concepts that are vital for the overall defence of the country,” he added.

To this end, the spokesman said, High Mark-2010 is aimed at conducting operations in a near-realistic tactical environment while integrating new inductions and providing role-oriented training to the combat and support elements of the force.

“The exercise is designed to achieve stipulated objectives with special emphasis on exposing PAF combat crew to simulated air battles based on contemporary concepts,” he added.

The exercise includes joint operations with extensive participation from the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy that would further enhance joint operations, integration and cooperation amongst the three services, the spokesman said.

New inductions like the JF-17 Thunder aircraft that has been jointly developed with China and force multipliers such as the Saab-2000 airborne early warning and control aircraft and air-to-air refuellers are participating in the exercise for the first time.
