PAF Combat Fleet numbers dwindling

Congratulations...you revived the dead thread by over 6 yrs :)

I was thinking should i open a new one...or look for old one...thought this was more relevant....i donot do it every now and then...but if u notice the story is same old.

But bro, worried about total combat strength of PAF, it needs to become bigger, atleast 100+ new fighters should have been in its inventory now. thanks to US delay games, PAF suffers badly in numbers as compared to IAF.

It is better to open a new thread.
I'm sure mods won't be too happy. I used to do that quite often when I was totally new :)
But bro your presence is older than me on pdf

Exactly what I was thinking, is it really 6 years wow boy time does flies

I think 2011-2013 we had energy issues so national focus was building or focused on civilian side

  • One thing is for sure the JF17 Thunder was produced more modestly , and we opted for gradual upgrade. (Sufficient planes not best case scenario but enough)
  • The F16 numbers almost made the estimates we thought it would be (Almost on target)
  • J10B we did not pick these up - we invested cash into civilian side
  • Mirage / F 7 now these figures are gradually reducing as we have to retire
  • The gas pipeline did not complete from Pakistan's side (Our fault 100%)

We controlled our own Decisions:

  • J10B , we opted out (To focus on future platform) , I hated that decision as delivery would have happened between 2014-2015
  • F16 obviously was way way more expensive side
  • JF17 Thunders (We did close out some External sales :yahoo:) , we got the Block 2 , I think also there was also engine research going on
But on the plus side , we solved our SAM issues

But raises an interesting point was J10B a missed chance to get 36 new planes ?

Economic issues, corrupt leadership, both PPP and PMLN stole 25 billions each.

.
I think economy played a big role
  • Power crisis due to electricity shortages
  • Then there were lack of Locomotives and railways was stuck

The last 2 years of Zardari's term were quite slow , and also there was lost momentum during first year in Nawaz's term.

Again focus was 100% on economy, and it should be on economy and trade ideally in any country since we have nuclear deterrent

I think the blame lies more with Civilian government and crippling energy shortages

Present focus on energy & trade is good decision , we have enough planes / Nuclear deterrence

But Pakistan did out perform in other areas
  • SAM
  • Coastal Defence Initiative
  • F22P made in Pakistan (2 Ships or last one)
  • Stealth Fast Attack boat
  • JF17 Block 1 , JF17 Block 2 (Officially moved to next phase)
  • AWACS:coffee:
  • Tanker

All of your post is interesting and I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for the summary.
I think J-10B and F-16C are fairly balanced A/Cs and J-10 would have added not only to the numbers but also a qualitative edge in some areas.

J-10 is slightly bigger airplane than F-16 but with slight shorter wing span. However it has 28 % larger wing area that means it can generate more lift and can land at slower speeds than F-16, lower wing loading and shorter take off if all other parameters are same. Furthermore it can go 15% higher than F-16 and almost 10% higher max speed. Now it is equipped with AESA radars and advance avionics so it is a fairly good A/C. It was powered by AL-31 engine but now WS-13 may replace it for better performance. Since it is used by PLAAF, so China will keep investing in it and upgrading it. @AsianUnion

JF 17 numbers can climb up any time but the best part is that it's attrition losses can be replaced without any problems. The attrition losses for block 1 can be replaced by block 3.

F7 flying and loitering time is an issue however it creates numbers in point defence missions. 2-4-6 of these show up to defend an area from IAF , can change the odds in PAF favour. Their offensive capabilities are limited.

Mirage 3/5 main problem is air frame life, which are nearing to an end otherwise their precision strike role capacity makes them front line aircraft in PAF today. Another plus is carrying Raad.

F-16 numbers can go up too as PAF is on lookout for used aircrafts and then upgrade them at TAI. It's range, payload capacity and avionics is so far the best that PAF has.

Issue is the future procurement. J-10 will add a new aircraft into inventory and let's see its fate is of A-5 as in quickly retired or of F-16, as in gradually increase numbers. However there is nothing confirmed, only rumours.

J31, TFX, Su35, EFT. Let's wait and see if any of these can get PAF colours on it,

Regarding Air Defence, HQ-9 will be the ultimate weapon of choice.

.
I guess Paf would be retiring all the F-7 variants and the long serving Mirage aircrafts, which have already served past their lifetime. Quantity is an issue. Paf should pay critical attention to quantity. Some of these will be replaced with the latest versions of the JF-17, and used F16s most probably to make up the numbers...... But Pakistan should be looking for advanced fighter aircrafts with range, deep strike capability and speed, J10 had engine problems, J10 was just a bit more capable than JF17s; soon JF17s will get AESAs, FADEC + New higher thrust engine.

It would also be more fitting if Pakistan tried to acquire single engine Gripen or the twin EFs...50 Aircrafts. In the end, I guess we would be going to China and most probably Russia, if all goes well in current negotiations, for the J-10, Mig35s and SU-35. J31/TFX for 5th Gen.

@Sarge @AZADPAKISTAN2009 @war&peace

Not sure about J-10.

If EFT is inducted, it will start with small numbers and then swell up gradually over a decade or two.

Pakistan has no experience of maintenance of stealth aircraft so it will be challenge when J-31 or TFX is inducted.

. .
J-16 strike fighter might be a good idea if Russia agrees to it. Maybe they want a Royalty money.... We'll see what paf is going to decide...
