ISLAMABAD: At least 32 members of a local jirga were killed when jets pounded their congregation in the Tirah Valley of Khyber on Saturday.

A jirga (tribal congregation) organised by the Koki Khel tribe was underway when the bombs struck, sources told DawnNews.

Locals said the congregation was discussion the problems put forth by members of the tribe. Reports, however, suggest it was a meeting arranged by a banned militant organisation.

Strikes in Orakzai, Khyber kill 96 militants

PARACHINAR: Pakistani airstrikes killed nearly 100 suspected militants in two northwest tribal regions Saturday, an apparent intensification of efforts by the army to mop up Taliban fighters fleeing a military operation farther south.

The strikes were carried out in the Orakzai and Khyber tribal regions.

In Orakzai, some 54 alleged militants were killed during ongoing clashes over a checkpoint in the Baizoti town area, local official Samiullah Khan told The Associated Press.

Another 42 people, most of them suspected insurgents, died in the Khyber tribal region when military jets pounded a hide-out the in Sra Walla area. The location was believed to be a gathering point for the Lashker-e-Islam insurgent group.

Two intelligence officials said jets pounded the area twice —once when local tribesmen were retrieving bodies from the rubble.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media on the record.

Local government official Rehan Khattak confirmed the strikes but refused to give a death toll.

The information could not be independently verified because access to the tribal areas is largely restricted.—AP

Pakistani jets kill 45 people in Khyber: militants

(Reuters) - Pakistani fighter jets bombed a militant position in the Khyber region on the Afghan border on Saturday, killing at least 45 people, a senior member of a militant group in the region said.

The strike was carried out in the remote valley of Tirah, the militant, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

"They first hit a house where our people were present and minutes later, when people got there to remove bodies from the rubble, jets attacked again," the militant said.

He said the dead included both militants and civilians.

A military spokesman confirmed that aircraft bombed militant hideouts in the region but said he had no information about casualties.

"We anticipate that the number of dead would be high because the bombardment was very intense," Rehan Khattak, a senior government official in the region, told Reuters. "We're trying to get exact figures."

A semi-autonomous Pashtun tribal region, Khyber is a major route for Western supplies trucked from Karachi's port to landlocked Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass. Militants have frequently attacked convoys in the region.

Security forces have recently stepped up offensives in Khyber and neighboring Orakzai regions to combat militants, who fled military sweeps in the Taliban strongholds of Swat, South Waziristan and Bajaur last year.

Militant attacks on supply convoys have forced the United States and its allies, who have forces in Afghanistan, to think of alternative routes.

Pakistani action against militants along the Afghan border is seen as crucial to U.S. efforts to bring stability to Afghanistan, particularly as Washington sends more troops to fight a raging Taliban insurgency before a gradual withdrawal starts in 2011.

So all these Killed are Pakistani terrorists not Pakistani Pashtun innocents? How can this be confirmed from bombing jirga with F-16s?

As we know majority of Bombings by American DRONES in Pakistan results in dead innocent Pashtun pakistanis? How is it possible, that PAF strikes only kill pakistani terrorists and not innocent Pashtuns, as bombs don't kill selectively?

As much as you like the sound of it, they were terrorists, specifically not Pakistani as you put it, and where did you pick up the Jirga accusation.
What you know is cumbersome since the Drones engage high value targets but no doubt some civilians also get caught up in the attacks.
And you don't have to know anything since Pashtuns are Pakistani Citizens hence our responsibility and not your headache.
