Monday July 1, 2013
During the past nine years, Telecom sector has submitted more than Rs. 510 billion to the government in form of taxes but every new government is trying to squeeze more juice out of the sector in order to hide their own ineptitude, as reported by The Nation.
As we mentioned in our previous article, the additional tax is bound to have a negative impact on the already deteriorating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country in addition to hurting network expansion plans of the operators and compromise quality of the service.
Experts inform that India has imposed 10.3% tax on telecom sector whereas Bangladesh has levied 15% taxes on it while on the other hand, in Pakistan all the taxes and duties will be 41.50 per cent from July 01 adding to the miseries of masses.
They said that in order to fulfill the tax collection target of Rs. 2.475 billion government is levying this tax which is a depiction of their shortsightedness. The former government also unilaterally imposed Sales Tax on mobile phones hurting 85% of the poor and middle-class consumers only to get around 50% decline in sales.
