Just watched another documentary on Mao. It's about the Great Leap Forward, which happened prior and led to the Cultural Revolution:

The anecdotes on cannibalism are heart-wrenching to watch.

What is interesting is how the Great Cultural Revolution was cast aside to create the modern economic miracle by those who still profess to be aligned with the same ideals. Such hypocrisy is always self-defeating, to tie in with our discussion elsewhere on this topic.
