We all know that the least livable and ultra shanty city in South Asia is none other than Dhaka.

But which city is the most modern city in South Asia?

My pick: Gurgaon

What is your pick?

. . . .
What’s your definition of a modern city?

For me, it is one that has
1. efficient public transportation options
2. A decent standard of living
3. entertainment and leisure options for its denizens
4. Ensures the safety of its people at all times
5. provides varied opportunities for employment
6. Places of interest for tourists along with the associated infra
6. Safety and security
7. Underground power and sewage lines
8. Connectivity to the rest of the world
9. Cosmopolitan and business friendly

... for me, with all its ills, it’s still got to be my home city, Bombay.

LOL on what basis?

Wealth? Infra? MNCs? Nightlife? Cosmopolitan? Technology?

Colombo fails in all these accounts

Just clean roads dont make modern cities.
it's more livable than any indian city for sure. on average people live better lives and sure it doesn't have super wealthy either. it's missing public transport then it will be up to standards.

colombo has also the highest gdp per capita of any city in south asia.

I agree to some extent. Poor people in Colombo live better than poor in Indian cities but Middle class and above will find better facilities in Indian metro cities any day.

Once Colombo gets a proper public transport system (which is a HUGE drawback) and slightly more wide-spread nightlife along with a more up to date airport terminal, it will be pretty sweet.

Gurgaon(Gurugram now) looks fantabulous in the glam shots, even if they are all cherry picked, but is it a sustainable city to live there or people travel from in and around New Delhi and other areas of NCR region, work and leave the city in the evening....

Mostly People from Delhi NCR come to Gurgaon for work since most of the major companies that operate in India has their regional offices in Gurgaon also.

Gurgaon is home to the following set of people:-

Delhiites who have moved to Gurgaon for lack of space in Delhi.
Professionals from all over India who come and settle in Gurgaon for work.
Local Haryanvi who have been living in what used to be a village for decades

It has transformed from a village to a cosmopolitan in no time and it is still growing.
To sum it up, yes, this city is sustainable as long as companies keep pouring money in this city.

.
Islamabad for being 'closer to nature' and with all the perks of a modern city including a good public transport, hospitals and institutions, unlike many cities with gardens...Islamabad gives feel of city within a garden.

The only thing missing is a night life...and that is one reason it is very calm and peaceful.

If by Modern you mean cosmopolitan city then Delhi/NCR is number 3 in South Asia after Mumbai and Bangalore.
