Seems many here are mistaken about this fact.

USA started supporting Israel only after it won the 1967 , six days war and proved it can fend for itself. Only after that the Americans where willing to sell us weapons.

It is not hard to realize that if you look at the planes used in the attack in 67 . All the fighter planes where French made :

France started weapons embargo on Israel before the war. So Israel actually had no super power or a strong country for support in 1967.
