India has arrived on the world stage with an unprecedented force by standing up to the bully. The US, drunk on power in a unipolar world, is shocked to see how India has reacted to the humiliation of a daughter of India, Devyani Khobragade. India has made it clear to the United States that if you humiliate us, we will not stop till we humiliate ourselves in front of the world. Proud Indians will relentlessly try to make a fool of ourselves on the world stage now that we have arrived. The world must learn that nobody messes with us when elections are around the corner.

To give them a taste of what's coming, India removed the security barriers in front of the US Embassy in Delhi. It's the festive season, by depriving the American Embassy officials of duty-free wine, India has sent the strongest signal ever that it can get serious when the time calls for it. Those days are gone when Uncle Sam could give it to us and we would take all lying down.

There is a history to it. The TSA mistreated our ex-president, APJ Abdul Kalam. Did we retaliate? No. They stripsearched our former defence minister, George Fernandes. Did we retaliate? No. And the biggest horror, they detained our superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Did we retaliate? No. We were satisfied after extracting a note of regret mostly. But arresting an IFS officer is the height of obnoxious behaviour? Do the Americans know that the policies that govern our mutual relationship are made by them? Obviously, no. And this miscalculation and utter lack of deep knowledge will cost them dear.

There are sensibilities involved here and countries must respect them. The US obviously does not go back long in time so it's bereft of any sense of tradition. That recent country abolished slavery and discrimination quite recently. We abolished slavery decades before them and replaced it with a mutually understood system of exploitation. Does the US want to tell us that one can't even peacefully exploit and ill-treat maidservants?

They have not only violated the Vienna Convention but the age-old convention of not paying minimum wage to domestic helps. That the US has no understanding of this is clear from the fact that they have weekly holidays for servants. They have also violated the principle that the servants have no right to complain. In fact, they have no rights at all.

How dare Preet Bharara take a maid's complaint seriously and take action against an IFS officer? Bharara is of Indian origin, something we were proud of till he displayed his shameless ignorance of the culture of his forefathers. Forget an officer, police are not supposed to touch even sons and daughters of IAS and IFS officers. Devyani Khobragade is not only an IFS officer, but she is also the daughter of a former IAS officer. This is criminal. If the police do not have such basic understanding and education of the facts of life, how the US even allows Preet Bharara to hold the post of attorney is beyond understanding. In India, policemen are immediately suspended if they touch a bureaucrat and dismissed if his object of action is a politician. You can't touch the rich either. A broken Rs.4-crore Aston Martin lying by the roadside is evidence. The matter came to light only after media pressure and a driver was forced to own up.

If there was media pressure, India could have understood. Indian police have acted against the powerful and the rich after it is impossible to not do so because of media pressure. Sanjeev Nanda and Manu Sharma would be partying like innocent young boys but the big headlines are a big headache. It obstructs the unnatural course of justice and forces it to follow the book and book even bureaucrats, politicians and rich kids. But in this case, there seems to be no excuse as the US media wasn't even aware of it.

The argument that Devyani was in violation of a local US law does not hold water either. First, the Indian Embassy and consulates are technically Indian soil. Second, we have been violating the law for six decades and the US raised this issue only two months ago and warned us about a possible action against our consul officer. Is warning someone polite behaviour? That too only two months prior to action? It takes two months to register a complaint here. If they have to act against an Indian officer, they must follow the Indian speed of action. This unilateral imposition of their work culture and rule of law is something India must not tolerate and retaliate with full force by allowing a paan shop right in front of the US Embassy gates.

Exploitation of cheap labour, discrimination based on caste/community, letting the powerful lord over the weak are integral parts of our culture like Kashmir is integral part of India. We don't want third-party intervention. Period.

$6000 for a low cast? you are clearly lying!

Indian low class do not have full access to basic facilities, how come high class hindus can pay $6000 to low cast?

Even worst, she's an outcast...
The diplomat is a Dalit. Dude, even worst in Indian context as Dalits are much more suppressed.
And Christians are much safer in India than in Pakistan.

the employer was not high caste, she is from lowest caste, dalit.
Dalits convert to christianity/buddism to be equal to higher caste hindus as christians and buddists have higher status in India.
the amount was paid in usa I presume, nobody will pay 6000 dollar to maid in India (or pakistan or bd)
Did you read the article, I am curious to know whether you passed or failed my test. :)

All the BS from US Justice Department is mere deflection. The point is that for a non-criminal charge, you don't arrest a Consular officer and put her in a prison much less strip search her. Even without invoking international law, countries accord some courtesies to diplomats of other countries. In this case, they messed with a friendly country!!

If necessary, they could have tried Devyani without arresting. But they did not. Preet Bharara had to make a political statement. He had to rake up $hit. He had to 'evacuate' the maid's family from India away from our courts. Isn't that an insult to our justice system? The consul was not running anywhere though the case was first noted in June 2013. Under these circumstances, why should India treat US as a friendly country?

US should apologize for the arrest and strip search. And then prosecute the diplomat if international law provides for it. But their consular officers should be prepared to face the same in India, whenever they violate the law, whether it is jumping a signal or having gay sex.
