An online petition has been started in a bid to nominate Congress leader Shashi Tharoor to be the Prime Ministerial candidate of UPA in the run up to 2019 General Elections. “Tharoor is a man well qualified with deep knowledge of international and national issues, who can connect with the people of India and with world leaders,” reads the online petition launched by a Thiruvananthapuram-based user.

“We nominate Dr Shashi Tharoor to be the Prime Ministerial candidate of UPA in the run up to 2019. In best interest of the World’s Largest Democracy and to rejuvenate the opposition,” the user said in his petition, which now has 6,725 supporters.

Tharoor, the two-time parliamentarian from Thiruvananthapuram, had worked at United Nations for over 30 years in various positions. He had also served as Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information. In addition, the 61-year-old internationally known speaker has authored several books, including the latest one Inglorious Empire.

Over the past few months, Tharoor has emerged as the most vocal of all Congress leaders and his popularity is at an all-time high following his book release and subsequent appearances in international shows highlighting how Britain drained India of its wealth.

He was India’s most-followed politician on Twitter until 2013, when he was overtaken by the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He currently has 4.9 million followers on the micro-blogging social media site.

Congress is passing though its worst phase since Independence, recording its lowest performance in the last Lok Sabha polls as its tally plunged from 206 to a mere 44. In the recently-held assembly polls, the grand-old party fared no better as Congress lost power in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand and also failed to woo the voters despite forging an alliance with Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh.

Sunanda Pushkar's MURDER will haunt him, he can't run from justice for long. He must make merry while he can.

Isn't that the guy who still has it out for the colonials who where here a while back?

EDIT:
I read the post. Yes, yes he is that guy.

Yes he is the same guy that triggers Daily Mail and The Guardian commenters.

. .
Most voting Indians don't know who he is.

Also Sunanda Pushkar case and the corruption issue around that is an issue.

Lastly, Rahul Gandhi is still maturing according to congress leaders. See Modi only entered politics at the age of 50, when he was already mature. Rahul baba must be given the same time...

I don't think the imbecile and his mother would let this happen. And the servile Congressis will carry on as usual...

He may be a good speaker but I don't think he has a mass connect and Pan India image and not many know him other than people living in Urban India

yeah he should try for elections in 2050.

More than mass connect or speaking skill a PM should have spine to stand up for what is right instead of being thrown around. Manmohan singh is a classic case.

But looking at the present scenario, Congress would need someone with mass appeal to even think of challenging Modi. And I don't think they have any, maybe Priyanka Gandhi can be one.

Rahul gandhi's future don't look bright. As for tharoor he'll not want to be another manmohan Singh.

Thats the problem, they need to get rid of gandhi family and move ahead. There were non-gandhi pm's like narasimha rao,MMS and they were able to hold the fort. Gandhi family along with sycophants is simply killing emerging leaders. It has simply become a mom&pop shop. They did have good second rung leaders like scindia,pilot...etc but had lay low. Its high time deserving ppl got a chance. All that they do is indulge in tokenism.

Indika has a point. They need to go beyond Gandhi family. That family has destroyed leadership and only promoted sycophancy.

Example - Maharashtra, an important state in India has voted for congress more than any other major state. For decades, barring sharad pawar (who was always at odds with Gandhi's for the same reason) they only chose some unknown incompetent sycophant as chief minister who only took orders from Delhi and even kids in Maharashtra had trouble remembering who Maharashtra CM is, let alone in India.

Do you know how much damage this does to our country? For once go beyond party lines and see this clearly.

And what experience does she have to lead to a nation of 1.3 Billion people? She is probably just as dumb as her brother, and the only reason people give her the benefit of doubt is because she hasn't been in the spotlight. She ll be just another Benazir Bhutto, with Robert Vadra playing the role of corrupt Zardari.

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is over, Congress needs to look for leadership elsewhere.

Exactly. She is like 45 years old and has never run anything of any importance before, let alone doing a job and now she gets to run a country 1.3 billion and 2.5 trillion USD big?

Do these people even truly care for this country? Such reckless disregard for our country is treasonous (I don't mean showstopper I mean those who will support her).

If I was a Congress party member, and if I was serious about making a national leader out of Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi, I would have projected them as the CM face for UP and made Congress fight the state election on its own.

But then you have people like Digvijay Singh giving the Gandhis political advise, not that am complaining!
