I was surprised by this. Fortunately, it is way off the mark. GINI indices for South Asian nations are:
Larger value means more inequality.
For comparison, it is
much worse for U.S.
Too much should not be made of this. If everyone is starving in a country, GINI will be a perfect 0. However, if everyone is living generally OK and there are tons of oligarchs like Bill Gates or Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, GINI will be higher showing inequality. I would think one should prefer the latter to the former.
You will notice that higher income countries also have worse i.e., higher numerical value GINI. Only way to achieve excellent GINI is by making everybody equally poor.
