Oman king scraps India visit

Stunned by the wave of protests at home, leaders of Arab nations are canceling their overseas engagements. King of Oman Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who was scheduled to visit India, has canceled the tour.

Qaboos had a meeting lined up with prime Minister Manmohan Singh and was also scheduled to vacation for a while in Jodhpur.

According to sources, the Sultan and his queens were supposed to arrive on February 8 on a personal visit, but the protests in Egypt forced the king to remain in Oman and closely monitor the growing public dissent in the Arab region.

Oman is India's most important Gulf partner. Indian companies, according to officials, are setting up manufacturing facilities at a free trade zone being developed in the port town of Sohar, about 200 km from capital Muscat.

Well, it is a logical decision. But judging omani leadership's performance, i really dont think he has any reason to worry. Truly a man of wisdom.

Sultan Qaboos is widely respected in Oman and Middle East for his austerity (I dont know but i guess relatively to other rulers) and is known as a benevolent ruler. But given the pace of protests who knows ??

The Sultan of Oman has maintained a low profile image and has not been profligate with his nation's resources. Apart from that, he has not used overtly repressive policies with his own people. Add to that a reasonably moderate international image and moderate relationships around the neighborhood. He is not a likely candidate for an uprising.

Did you ever visit Oman? i lived in Oman and since sultan came to power Oman progress rapidly and every big porject in Oman start and finish by His majisty and i like him. No doubt he is a true leader
