MULTAN:

The Punjab government has issued a notification to close brick kilns from November 1 to December 20 ahead of the smog season.

Punjab Environmental Protection Department Assistant Director Environment Hameed Akhtar told APP on Thursday that as per the notification, old technology based brick kilns would not be allowed to operate during the mentioned period. Only zigzag technology brick kilns would be allowed to operate in the province.

He said that they would ensure implementation of the orders by the government to close brick kilns without any discrimination. Prearrangements to combat smog have been completed and inspection of all brick-kilns had already been made, he added.

The assistant director said that smog season would start from end of October and continue till January.

Deadline set for brick kilns to go high tech

“Three brick kilns have been shifted to zigzag technology in Multan, while one brick kiln was under construction,” he said. Akhtar added that they had imparted training on the latest technology to the workers who worked at brick kilns.

He said after lab analysis of brick kilns emissions, it was found that carbon content was higher than the admissible limit at all kilns. Such emissions cause smog, he said, adding that two teams have been formed to monitor brick kilns day and night during the smoggy weather.

He said that Section 144 has been imposed and there was a ban on burning crop residue, municipal solid waste, tyres, plastic, polythene bags, rubber, leather items and others during three months from October 1st to December 31 across the province. The environment department teams along with city traffic police were conducting raids against vehicles over noise and pollution, he added.

We are using very primitive technology that produces a lot of pollution at low level that adversely affects the environment & health of the local population. While using new technology and material for building and construction, we can reduce this pollution by 90%.

In the last 7 years and change, ever since I was based in Lahore last year was the best as it was smog free, reason was on orders of supreme court Punjab Govt effectively managed to shut down all old brick kilns in Punjab and ensured that residual crop is not burned down, along some good luck from Allah as the wind direction mostly remained west to east. One of the reason Delhi had denser smog last year as all farmers in India along border of Pakistan particularly paddy farmers do burn the residual crop like Pakistan.

Pakistan did ban last year but India never did take any action and enjoyed smog in Pakistan. So for all negative people we are doing much better in many areas than the planet of the apes along our eastern border and one further to their east.

This primitive kiln industry is in fact is the worst kind of mammoth living in the subcontinent till this day. It not only produces huge amounts of very dangerous type of pollutants ..large particulate matter that is really bad for lungs, CO2, CO ( Carbon Monoxide: a poisonous gas), are green house gases and result in temperature increase.

This industry thrives on the bonded labour and the labourers are not only forced to work in the most inhuman and hazardous environments, they are very low paid and treated like slaves.

Furthermore, this industry is very inefficient in all respects, it wastes most of the heat and consumes a lot more fuel than needed, produces low quality product since there are no quality controls and harms the whole ecosystem.

Please don't destroy the livelihood of people in the name of climate. First provide them with newer plants

These are excellent decisions that need to be enforced stringently for them to be effective in reducing smog and help protect public health.

These kilns have made smog a common thing across many cities in pakistan. Its a good step but the government should support the kiln owners to use modern technology, rather than making people working in these kilns jobless overnight. Good step if implemented properly.
